Should I just be hacking out in the wilderness generally, or would field levels be quicker? What's the best overall strategy for quickly leveling up my gathering skills in order to support my production skills?
Thanks!

Leves are faster but limited by allowance. Grinding nodes however earns more money from having stock to sell.
And make sure you pick up survival manuals from your GC.
Leves are fastest hands down. Go for that title while you do them
Sometimes though, while leveling Miner, I sat at an ore node for five levels to get about 2000 ores, then sold them. Took way way way longer but I made some money.

Clearly, the best Final Fantasy character is Locke Cole.

I discovered field leves and did those for all of my DoL and DoH skills, whew! That was great, until I ran out of Allowances. I wasn't even aware I was consuming them, and now I'm completely out. I see that they respawn 3 per 12 hrs. Is that the *only* way to get them? No quest, no cash shop item? Just brutally slow time? I understand the limitation, I would have just kept leveling my heart out, but it's disappointingly reminiscent of labor points in ArcheAge.
Thanks for the tips. I am not familiar with the term "survival manuals" at my GC but I'll go back and check my contacts with the Twin Adders and see what they have to offer. I only leveled up there far enough to get my Chocobo and have otherwise stuck to the main story line.
Thanks, guys!

Unfortunately there is no way acquire leves faster, although you can hold up to 100 at a time. Once you complete the MSQ "In Pursuit of the Past" at 41 you unlock dailes from the beast tribes. The one's offered by the Ixal camp in the North Shroud are a great way to level crafting classes, although you are limited on how many you can do a day. Doing your grand company's delivery requests once a day can also get you a good amount of crafting exp (the list needed is under timers). While leves are in short supply I'd use those to level crafting and save leves for gathering if you want to work on both.
The GC supply and provisioning quests are available for both crafting and gathering. It's only one per day per class, but if you're leveling everything, that's a total of eight crafting quests and three gathering quests each day that give a lot of XP (especially if you turn in HQ items). You can accumulate a lot of GC Seals in the process as well.
Beyond that, it's leves as you accumulate the allowances for them (half a dozen a day if you've run through your allowance stockpile), Ixal quests once you can unlock them (another six quests per day after that level 41 unlock Naria mentioned), and old-fashioned grinding.
