Basically you don't. You have to be friends to send Moogle mail and you can only send friend requests to someone who is online at the time.

You either give them to a friend to give back to you or have access to a FC chest they can be stashed in.

the only real reasons to have more than one character are for extra storage which Sagittarian said above makes it a pain.

Just because we can do everything with one character doesn't mean everyone will want to. The game also offers a basic subscription allowing one character per server and a more expensive standard subscription allowing eight per server, so SE clearly expects some players to want multiple characters and even be willing to pay extra for the right to have multiple characters. It really does seem like they should give us some better options for coordinating between them if we do.

But anyway, yes, currently the options are asking a friend to pass stuff to your alt for you, using the FC chest (if your alts are all in the same FC), or selling stuff to yourself through the marketboard. None are ideal, but that's what we've got.

I use the market board. Your alts can still buy stuff from each other's retainers. It's a bit of a pain, but it works as long as you don't set the price so low that someone buys it before you can swap characters.
