DOnt' use fraps. It will only kill your computer as it's that much more intensive. I start fraps and lose 40fps assuming the game/puter doesn't crash.

Yikes, I hardly even noticed it was on with my old Pc lol.
Guess its something to note though incase.
The biggest reason for the performance hit, my guess would be, is that you are writing to your hard drive uncompressed hd video, which is huge. And I think to capture you have to render everything twice. Back in the day it didn't matter much, or with lesser games, but if your gpu is pegged and you fire up fraps to record, you're gonna kill your cpu, gpu, and hdd.

Aye, I can see why it would hit a system, but even with my AMD 5200+ and 260sli rig in late beta I lost 6-10fps with FFXIV, which I thought was great given the system was struggling even with the OC'ing on my CPU as it was far to weak.
And I recorded to a different hard drive to my Games Drive or Os drive, Guess its about system set up as much as anything else at times.
sorry i haven't been able to reply but here is the issue and i got picures to show u ok
