Dearth of XP from quests

Twice now, I've run out of quests (both MSQ and SQ) short of being the right level to continue the story. Even with rested XP, just doing the quests leaves you below level 57 when you run out and then again at 58 when you run out again. I had to run a few dungeons for gear I didn't need, use leves I wanted to save for DoL/DoH and run some (incredibly low XP) FATEs to get through the last part of the level. Is this intended?

did you roulette/do hunts? at 53/56 you get daily bills that give you 5 things to kill for 23k each/28k exp each.

also get any challenge log stuff done?

I haven't done either, Hunts aren't my thing and the highest roulette I have unlocked is hard. I might have to look at the Hunts, I really don't like chain running dungeons.

well the hunt bills are just kill 1-3 of this monster (like hunting logs)

you get new ones daily, so it's like a extra 100k exp a day when you have both it's like 200. i know it's not super great but it's a nice little boost.

now roulette high/low/trial/main will give 100k each too. (not counting monster/boss exp. some don't give exp from that stuff though)

You couldn't do that from 1-50 when you first started the game, not that much different now really.

I levelled to 60 almost entirely from questing. Otherwise, I did the roulette sometimes (and got the challenge log rewards too as a result).

Temple leves are basically quests and they give a ton of xp while not taking much longer than a usual leve.
It does eat allowances though, so it's not a sustainable source but you shouldn't need it to be.

Be sure to check areas you've already cleared. Sometimes higher level side quests appear in the lower areas.

I hit 60 on sunday. I did Roulettes for Saturday and Sunday (low/trials/heist, forgot about them on fri), I did every MSQ and Every side quest, I have two SQ in the last zone (saving for another job). I did less than 15 fates, I did three days (fri-sun) of clan hunts, and I ran one extra dungeon, also I did three (L) leve at level 59. It's just really boring.

I'm lv54 atm, and I'm still doing lv53 quests... Was it the same to you back then? Or could you have missed some?

Western Coerthas opens up new quest chains at 56 also Also Sea of clouds has more 56 quests. Forelands opens up more at 57. Levelled up MNK to 60 with MSQ some sidequests, stopped when I unlocked flying in the zone, some dungeons, and still have loads of side quests to get my PLD (now 57) upto 60. Also joining in on FATEs as I pass close for extra XP. Leves, daily hunt logs.
