Hmm, the "bad example" videos got removed because people actually liked what they saw there?

the above should not be taken seriously under any circumstances.
I vote for free jumping, not situational-type jumps. Not everyone is a child here and as for the few immature who will spend their time jumping, I don't mind since I certainly will not play with them.
"Let's handcuff everyone, because some commit crimes", this type of mentality is what kills the fun in games in my opinion.
LOL cash shop! SE's way to tell their player how they appreciate them... pull the carrot and empty your pockets $$$
And to those who support it: you are kicking yourselves. -- We just need to sit back and laugh at people with cash shop items.
(Marvelous economics IQ test!)
I just want to say i think it is crazy people are complaining jumping will ruin immersion but everyone was perfectly happy when Square added the option to hide your weapon, so when drawn you pull it out of your ass, because that is so realistic. No way is jumping as big as an immersion killer as that stupid pointless feature was. Square doesn't care about things like immersion anyway. At least jumping has some practical uses.
Just so long as it isn't the 'jump' mechanism from Star Wars Galaxies or Age Of Conan, all they were were animations.
Could you elaborate on this, please? You're the second to make that argument, and I don't understand what it's supposed to mean. What else should it be? Jennestia, I think you said it too, what do you mean with "just an animation"?

Basically, when you press the jump button on SWG or AoC your character does a jumping animation but the game engine still operates as if you were standing on the floor, so if you try to jump off a cliff you'll slide down it as if you were running down it, and cliffs you can't run down you can't jump down. It totally defeats the purpose of having a jump button, since you're never 'actually' jumping.
Interesting! I only fooled around a bit with the free trial of AoC, never payed attention to this. Could you still jump on things at least?
The cliff thing is understandable though, being able to jump doesn't neccessarily mean you no longer have invisible barriers. There are still areas where it makes sense to prevent players from entering or leaving.

On AoC you could jump over things but it was really glitchy, it often caused characters to pass through the object or bounce around on it. On SWG jump had no practical function, you couldn't jump over or on anything, if you tried to jump over something, even if it was only one foot tall, you'd still hit it like you were running.Interesting! In FFXIV there's not really anywhere we're particularly restricted from going, jump would simply serve as a quicker way to get down a cliff instead of having to run all the way around it to get to the lower ground.
I think it's all a case of sensibility. At the moment our characters 'aren't daft enough' to try and run off a vertical cliff so we stop at the top of it and have find an area to run down. Those of us that have 'lemming tendencies' (like me) would rather take the risk of leaping off high places than waste ages finding somewhere to run down.
lol at 100s of people afk using jump bots. I mean really.
IMO I would like SE to do it the easiest way possible, and I think adding thousands of jump points to the game will not be it.
I so agree with the FF13 style jumping... freestyle jumping would be really strange in an FF, and it'd just be stupid to look at if all these great-looking detailed characters were just hopping around in circles throughout the cities like it's WoW. I can also imagine the havoc jumping would wreak with hairstyles and robes and stuff. Proabably wouldn't be pretty to look at someone jumping up and down constantly for 10 minutes if they had quite a few items that were flailing about haphazardly.
