I feel like the reason the children will be never be playable is much, much more simple than anyone seems to be thinking. Putting issues of ethics aside.

The script for the game assumes you are an adventurer of at least twenty years, going by how NPCs interact with you. Adjustments are made based on your character's gender and on their species, but only in terms of pronouns and nouns swapped out here and there. If you were a child the nature of your interactions with many NPCs would different, requiring the game to check for that. It would be a lot of work, especially for voice actors.

Lord Haurchefant, one of this game's most beloved characters, is a good example of what I am talking about. He sees you as an equal and a dear friend (a potential lover, even, if you aren't on the English client). If the player character was a kid that dynamic wouldn't work and...basically all of this character's dialogue would have to be changed.


They were barely able to make doing old content as a new species make sense in terms of how NPCs interact with you. Doing it as a little kid would be an even bigger WTF.

1. As long as I've played this game, just about every NPC treats me like one thing, an adventurer with experience (AKA slave convenience).
2. Your a mute, voice actors don't even have to try. You know how many high pitched voice selections we have already?? look at them yourself. Btw did you also know that it took a year to make a new character race? They're aware of how difficult it is and are very careful of how things connect with the story.
3. Your character is potentially the same age as they were in FFXIV 1.0, time travel, go figure. Who's to say you weren't a kid when Hydaelyn spoke her mystical voodoo to you.
3. Equality can easily be determined through experience and respect, not just age. Haurchefant can see you as a younger sibling, easily changed in text and not a problem for SE since they're used to script changing (other races and genders), not that it's your problem exactly as your not the developer.

I'm done with this thread now though. Negative fanbase is negative, and its disgusting (not the ones that mention lore and awkward age ranges of 6-12). As already a mildly violent of a game, you see kids go through rough times (Foundation-meant to correct that in previous threads), dying from the cold, homeless, hunting for food, but fine. I for one welcome the idea of playable young hero classes (14-17 personally, like Sora). Shame some can't even say a simple, "No, I don't want to play as a kid in this game.", but wow, just, wow.

I am not talking about the voice actors of our characters, I am talking about the voice actors of NPCs. Haurchefant, again, in English could see you as a younger sibling but might be less prone to calling you "my friend".... But let's not forget that character is much different in Japanese. In Japanese he sexually propositions you (and not subtly either, he flat out asks you to join him in bed). The Scions of the Seventh Dawn also all talk about us like we're peers in age. The story is just not about KIDS. Alphinaud is treated as a youngster by people and he's 16. We are not referred to or interacted with in quite the same way as Alphinaud.

Are there games where you play as kids? Yep. This isn't one, story-wise. Kingdom Hearts, The Windwaker, etc are all games where you being a kid character was built into the game, its setting, and its story since the beginning.

I'm not saying kid PCs will never happen in FFXIV. I am, however, saying it's very unlikely.
