I doubt the WoD is gonna be switched out for a mirror version of our characters, if that were to happen, they would never have shown him.

The fact they showed this "dark Derplander" gives me a clearly reason that the WoD is gonna be the mirror version of our characters.
Precisely, since the derplander in all of the videos and art is a representation of the pc anyway, why shouldn't the Dark Derplander be a placeholder for an evil reflection of ourselves?
What im more interesting to see is how is gonna be a fight againt him if it is a trial of 8 people. Is the WoD gonna have a diferent looking depending on the character ( in terms of programing, it can be done ). But does his skills/Job are gonna depend as well on how is your charater?
The only logic way all this would enter, if it turns to be a individual fight instead of a trial fight.
Or if his look depends on yours, but like a normal boss, he has moves from no job, or abilities from literally every job. Fighting an opponent who has access to all the jobs and seeing him switch modes during the fight would be exciting. What im more interesting to see is how is gonna be a fight againt him if it is a trial of 8 people. I'm of two minds on it...
FOR Derplander, it would just be kinda fun to have him there...maybe see how he because the WoD, instead of (a) WoL. Was he there for Legacy? Did he fail at something? Maybe he was never sent forward in time...or maybe he was, but to somewhere completely different? Maybe the whole Dalamud dropping with nothing he could do broke his belief in Hydaelyn?
FOR Doppleganger: We already know that the FF universe's are connected via the Void (Since thats how Gilgamesh gets everywhere)...but what if it isn't just different FF universe, but multiple versions of each universe too? The WoD Doppleganger isn't just some clone, but an actual alternate universe version of us that for some reason went to Zodiark instead of Hydaelyn. As well for this version...while for many it won't matter since their main has always been the same, I think it would be kinda nice if they stayed the class/job you started out as EG If you are a Paladin who eventually decided to be a Dark Knight, the doppleganger would still be a Paladin type of thing.
I also believe that the derplander is just a placeholder for "all of us". In the CGIs he is shown witnessing the "death" of Nanamo (like we did as PCs), as well as moving to Ishgard and switching jobs to impale dragons with spears as stiff as ice.
The Dark Derplander is, in my opinion, what our PCs CAN become if they keep going on their path - getting more and more powerful, annihilating everything that stands in their way (including dragons which, per se, were not evil at all).
As seen in FF3, the "Warriors of Darkness" are not inherently evil either - I see them as "anti-hero" stereotypes rather than antagonists.
Remember that, in the FF lore, there can be TOO MUCH light - and that is as bad as having Darkness engulfing everything. Balance must be maintained at all costs, and since Light has been winning for years now, it's time for Darkness to bolster up its strength and even things up.
Like the Light Emperor in FF2 and the Archbishop in HW, we can clearly see that Light can be twisted to "evil" purposes anyway. Hell, the Archbishop sees us as darkness incarnate just before dying - we might have been playing the role of Warriors of Darkness already without knowing it. What if Elidibus planned this? After all, the Archbishop kinda betrayed the Ascians so he had to be purged - his "Holy Light" had to be snuffed out. It's only natural that, if you help defeating the "Light", you are automatically a "Force of Darkness" - no matter if the Light you defeated was evil in the first place.
One thing that stroke me as odd the first time I read it was the line that King Thordan says on screen when he is defeated. It's something along the lines of:
"This is the power of Light..?"
Now, that can be interpreted in two ways. Either he is amazed by how pro you are at wielding the Power of Light, or he is doubtful that you are wielding Light at all. Considering how he sees you after that, I think the latter.
We in the west tend to believe that "light = good" and "dark = evil", but this should not be taken for granted.

It would be interesting if Derplander/ the other Warriors of Light in the promos end up being the Warriors of Darkness.
It will be interesting since they aren't exactly evil, its just the our character is "getting too strong" to the point where our power is godlike.
Ysayle was one of Hydaelyn's chosen
Player
Yeah I don't see that happening either despite what people are wanting. I think it'd be kinda dumb too and just pushes our self importance if they decided they need a clone of us to stand a chance. It'd be more interesting if there are adventurers who became strong under a different power to our own. The WoL has grown significantly and to balance things out there should be others on the dark side (It's all getting a bit star wars XD). It'd be cool to see a character that had the same experience as us from a different perspective. The yang to our ying or something. We had Iceheart as somebody who had the same experience but fell off the path laid out to her using her power for selfish reasons thinking she was divine until she realised she was wrong so more perspectives of "chosen ones" would be fun.

Yeah getting huge FF3 vibes from the story now oh and the Archbishop at the end was just wondering WTH are you the whole blackness thing was either his fear or viewing you as a force for darkness. I personally do view the bishop as a force of light as well. Oh I am calling it NOW at the end of heavensward we are going to become a warrior of darkness. Since they have now introduced this whole equilibrium notion now.
