I have a few quesions/concerns about getting to level 50. I have heard that you need better gear to quest in the heavensward content. Does this mean I will have to gear before questing or do I have poor information?

The main story quest after level 50 is now supposed to give equip of iLvl high enough to enter Ishgard (90+).
you can pretty much do it as you go. All primals have a required ilvl, so you can gauge how geared you are with the requirement to see if your on the right track.
You get i90-i110 gear as rewards from the post-50 main story quests. That gets you through the old story without any issues, and when you get to Ishgard you can buy i115 gear from the NPC vendor if needed.
The first area you enter in the xpac is The Foundation and there is a shop selling weapons & armor iLV 115.

One other note in case you don't know: You must complete all the story quests up to the end quest of the 2.55 patch before you can enter Ishgard anyway. It's these quests that send you into the group content that requires certain levels of gear and of course that gear will be fine for Ishgard. There's a thread in the new player forum about this here:

That might help a bit. :-)

Except you don't need to worry about gearing up anymore, since you get a good enough gear set just by completing the story quests nowadays. One other note in case you don't know: You must complete all the story quests up to the end quest of the 2.55 patch before you can enter Ishgard anyway. So yes, you do need to finish the rest of the story after hitting 50, but there's no need to farm for gear anymore.
Once you get to Ishguard you can purchase i115 gear from regular vendors.
But in order to get there, you'll have to finish the regular storyline which will need some better gear.
I would check NPC vendors and storyline quest-gear.
If you haven't done your level 50 job-class quest, I know that they give you your i50 body AND an i90 body as well, now.
Not sure about the level 45 class quests... but maybe those do the same thing?
I don't think SE wants to make it hard for people to gear up to get into Heavensward... only after you're in there![]()
I did get two sets of gear from my level 45 dragoon quest. One set to wear at 45, and one for level 50, both missing the chest piece which I assumed would come from the level 50 dragoon quest, but glad to see that confirmed!
