I think asking about it on here is more likely to get the ban. I personally caution against swapping dat files for installation safety reasons, though I don't believe there is any way for SE to discover if you are doing this unless you discuss it openly in game or on the forums.
I don't think its something that can be easily done, if at all, because the game data is in packages, so the music data is stored with all sorts of other data. Also, I'm pretty sure the game engine also only loads certain parts of the music tracks for different parts of zones, or different parts of encounters; and some places that doesn't even play music at all. Think of Titan for example, as his health gets lower, the music gets more complex. An easier solution would be just create your own music play list in your favorite player and just load that =)
There is a Data Explorer software that can be used to not only view gear in 3D models like on WowHead.com but can also swap one music for another (like: using the FF VI Boss battle theme from Ultros & Typhoon trial to make it play during regular battles with mobs, or during FATEs for ex)
I'm not sure if it's now possible to use an external file. ..
As someone said, the game uses compressed packaged files. And the music format is in .SCD IIRC
You CAN convert SCD files to WAV but not vice versa, well at least it wasn't possible 6 months ago...
I think you can now use FF XI (or was it XII ? XIII ? XV ? ) SCD music files too with this software tho
At least, swapping one music theme by another INGAME will not make you banned. And it doesn't prevent updating the game with newest patches.

^ EDIT: You can now convert OGG files to SCD and import them

i was only curious if it was against the terms of rules and i woulnt even dare to do it lolI think asking about it on here is more likely to get the ban. Why? Your ears bleeding from the awesome soundtrack already?
By swap do you mean to go into the audio files and change it or just muting bgm and turning on your own music? because the latter is ok and sometimes encouraged as PS4 supports cross-play music and pc does their own thing.
like putting dubstep remixes of like mounting a chocobo etcWhy? Your ears bleeding from the awesome soundtrack already?

Since doing this would involve altering local game files beyond their normal user-configurable state, doing so is almost certainly a violation of the TOS and you'd risk a ban by doing so.

You cannot swap music at all. Not already ingame or external. It is a bannable offense because you are altering the code of the game, which is against TOS.
Step 1: Mute in-game music
Step 2: Open music player of choice.
Step 3: Play preferred music.
Step 4: ???
Step 5: Profit.
