What if the Thief was a gathering class?

With the current Armorer system it really doesn't make sense to have a fighting class as a thief. It may have in other Final Fantasy games but not this one. If you think about it the fighting classes describe what tool they use, Lancer - uses a lance, Gladiator uses gladiuses a.k.a swords, and so on. The fighting classes are only associated by what weapon they are using. So to add a theif would mess that up since thief is not characterized by what weapon he has (even if it is usually a small knife). I think that you can have a thief be a gathering class. Botanist and Miner are kind of the same but Fishing is a little different. You can fish at the same location for as long as you want, but the downside to that is you get a little less sp out of it. It balances out but what if the thief class was the opposite of fisherman? He could only gather once at every location (npcs and players personal bazzar) Npcs would not stop you from stealing from them but if a player was not afk they would be able to stop you. This would stop people from camping out in Ulda'h for days at a time waiting for people to buy their goods. In order to become a thief you could equip a picklock or something. I think this would be a cool idea. After stealing for so long you could gain abilities that would help you get more items in combat. I think this is a cool idea with only one problem I can see right now. Every gathering class picks up items that are unique to that class. I don't know if they could add items that thieves and only thieves could pick up. You guys let me know if you think this is a good idea as well.

I am not sure I understand you correctly, you want a class to be able to steal from other players, and without any repercussions, if they see you stealing, you would just fail the action?
Nope, can not say I like this, not the way the game is set up.

You can't have a job that levels off stealing from players >.>
Otherwise you're kindof right. Thief is more of a gathering job than a battlecraft.

thief could be a very good fit to DOW.

Make small adjustments to the GLA class so they dont use daggers anymore, replace the current daggers with shortswords (still a piercing weapon) to keep the versatility in GLA choice of weapons.

Now, thieves use daggers, and make them so they dual wield them, daggers should come in pair(like the pgl hand-to-hand weapons) and grant 2 attacks. They should deal a fairly high amount of damage and generate alot of enmity, with some kind of way to dump or transfer it(on a cooldown).

They should be able to wear about the same armors as archers, going more for movement and fluidity than defense.

I personally think it would make up for a very good DOW class.

    EDIT: Fixed a typo.

The only thing they could steal is things from your personal bazaar. That is not a lot of stuff and all the things in there are stuff you put. Plus if you never go afk then you can keep all the stuff in your bazaar and never get anything stolen. However you get up to get a drink or go to the bathroom and you run the risk of having stuff in your bazaar taken out. It would be like a secondary stealing option so they would have to have the secondary item equipped. This could be a bad idea admittedly but I like it.

the main thing about bazaar AND retainers is that you can sell your things while not having to be in front of your computer. this is a REAL bad idea...id be really mad to wake up the next morning and see that a thief stole all the buc gear i put in my bazaar! Yeah after all, why PAYING for that stuff in peoples bazaar if i can just steal it off of em?

You're thinking of a different class. The OP is talking about the original thief concept, rather than the melee dps class it became during these past few years. The classic thief was a master of traps, misdirection, and getting into places that most others can't (including peoples' pockets).

I would really like to see SE utilize the flexibility of the class system to its fullest to give use more classes that aren't combat oriented. A well-designed thief class is a good start, but you could also argue for bards, dancers, treasure-seekers, scribes, imbuers, farmers, archaeologists, and any number of skillsets that haven't been touched on yet by the current class systems. I just hope they've made the class system flexible enough to allow such variety.

Then we need full loot FFA PvP to counter this, like Mortal Online. And then people would leave the game.

However, why not just make the "stealing" like other gathering, as in the stolen item are randomly generated based on "node-character" level? Not stealing the real item those characters have.

Stealing from players is a very bad idea for obvious reasons.

I am liking the idea of thief as a gathering class if the nodes are NPCs and/or monsters instead. The monster side of it would be rather difficult. Perhaps thief can use a stealth or camouflage skill in order to steal successfully from aggressive monsters but I imagine the only items you'd be able to obtain would be the same as those you'd obtain from killing the monster.
