Things people do when they're bored.

    Spam casting self-targeted spells
    Spam other-player-targeted spells/buffs/toys
    Running in circles
    Dancing
    Shouting (or talking in general)
    Spam mount/dismount
    Spam calls/raid warnings
    Duel
Swap gear out/put on birthday suit
    Spam emotes
    Jump

Almost all of the above are at least on par with jumping in terms of distractions, annoyances, or things that are un-immersive.

Why is jumping the only one that catches flak for being something that people do when bored?

Immersion is a weak argument. Ive never felt any type of immersion when playing a game. Its a game, I play it to have fun and enjoy the game mechanics. Could care less about immersion.

That's beside the point, but I agree.

i dont think it is jumping per say that makes ppl want to pull other their hair, its the abuse of it and the stupid things it can help u do.

Free jumping (so just pushing a button to jump) lets players hop around the map like rabbits, which just looks stupid and makes the game unrealistic (yes i kno, its a fantasy game w 2 foot midgets and dragons blah blah unrealistic) but come on, do u see a lot of ppl hopping up and down the streets?
Jump from really high places and dying/surviving. Again, it just makes the game look stupid. Having players jump from 100 story towers or into fires just kills realism from the game. As well as it makes the developers have to make every environment in the game movable by the player. Graphics and texture making in computer programs are linear (i.e. if i make the texture/graphics twice as good, it takes twice the memory/power to play) it is actually on scales of magnitude. So to make the game twice as good in terms of graphics, it actually takes 10x more work/memory/power to play. (numbers r made up, but the principle is sound) Can you imagine how hard it would be for the designers to make everything in the world in FFXIV walk about or swimable or whatever. It would be a lot of work

I would say because someone constantly jumping is annoying to the eyes. If someone is in your peripheral vision and spamming jump it really can be distracting/annoying. Now I can't speak for others but thats why I hate it. I don't think many people will be jumping though except the Lalas.

edit: If its free jumping anyway. If FF online keeps that mature(for the most part) community then many people wont abuse it I think(hope).

I still dont see why people are worrying about people jumping around their screen. It's not like you ever see anyone anyways.

Let me ask you this. If someone was constantly abusing any of the items on the list besides jumping, would it still be annoying?

    - how often do you see walking down the streets with broadswords killing giant rats? See what I did there?

-Ya because this game is so realistic...
