What happened to our companions from 1.0?

So I'm somewhere in patch 2.3/2.4 and I don't think there has been any mention of the companions we had before the Calamity (at least those of us who were around back then).

Did our companions die? Frozen in time? Taking a holiday in Costa Del Sol?

I kind of miss my companion.

Presumably they died in the Calamity - the last time they appeared in 1.0's story was at the end of the final Path of the Twelve story quest Future's Perfect, where they stated they were visiting the ALC's Guild in Ul'dah to seek treatment for the injuries Gaius and his soldiers inflicted on them. And after that, they're never heard from again (because the original 1.0 storyline was terminated and replaced with the 'Seventh Umbral Era' story to lead into ARR, with the original 1.0 storyline retconned and cannibalized for ideas for ARR).

Gameplay wise, I don't have the source sadly but back before ARR's launch Yoshi was asked about the Path Companions and basically stated they've been effectively abandoned in ARR and their function has been replaced with the chocobo companion and story npcs fighting alongside the player in relevant battles. Additionally, the whole gameplay point of a Path Companion was actually it was meant to be one of the ways the player could undertake 1.0s storyline (read: story battles) as a class other than a discipline of war or magic (as in, a crafter or gatherer) - other ways was directing story npcs to doing the fighting for you while you stood back, and the Parley minigame which was meant to actually be a way to convince the enemy to basically give up without fighting at all.

Naturally, none of this worked nearly as well as it was meant to, which explains the reason for the emphasis ARR has on levelling a Discipline of War or Magic (unlike 1.0 you're restricted to starting the game as a DoW or DoM class - you can't start the game as a Disciple of the Hand or Land). So sadly, as much as I would love to see my sultry, flirtatious GLA Path Companion Imarah again, I think Yoshi has effectively abandoned any intention to bring them back (despite hinting back to them in the Minion Guide).

Ah yes, the path companions. I rarely think about them, but mine always made me uncomfortable. I'm a female person playing a female miqo'te, and I chose a female miqo'te as my path companion... Well, she spent the entire time mercilessly flirting with me. (Your path companions had different personalities depending on their origin.) I suppose it's sad they died in the calamity, but we had to lose more people than just Louisoix... I like the way the chocobo companions function better, anyway.

It would be nice to get a lore explanation as to what happened to them.
