Which is why they're creating the job system. In addition, with the release of 1.19 they're releasing their intended redesigns of classes and their abilities for player feedback.
The original idea was that you could create your own class. You could be the FF classic like Black Mage or Paladin or something completely unique. But the sad truth is that the game was rushed out the door before that system could be thoroughly developed.
I'm not sure this happens too often. Not sure what you mean by "it leaves you hanging" either.
It's an MMORPG, it's up to you to decide where the adventure goes. Albeit, it's an MMORPG in a major state of change. patches 1.18-1.20 were meant to alter some core mechanics of the game.
With the claiming and exp chain changes coming in 1.19, so too are mob placement alterations.
To be completely honest, this barely is a coherent thought.
What exactly is "WoW-like" about XIV?
It's not that they set out to be WoW-like anyway. They originally set out to be "not like XI."
XI was a game for folks with a time of time to invest. XIV was, and still is, intended for players with less time to devote. There are very few things in XIV that overtly emulate World of Warcraft, in any way.
Saying a game is "just like WoW" without substantive examples of what ways it is like said game and how that is a negative is just a red flag for poor trolling.
The initial release of XIV is a symbol of what happens when a developer deliberately avoids game mechanics just for the sake of not being like some other game.
It's like saying Call of Duty sucks because it's just like Doom. What with it's first person shooting and what not.
People keep crying "easy mode" in relation to XIV as if XI had any real challenge. The only "challenge" in XI was staying awake between spawn windows. Outside of that the game pretty much played itself unless you were a tank or healer.
EDIT: And to be completely frank, unless you have another character, I don't think you've invested enough time in XIV to know if it's like WoW or not.
