I think they did that to make it look mystic/magical versus just lying flat on your back as a lifeless shield. I didn't like it at first but when u think of the lore of the AST. It makes sense.
I noticed the male Au Ra lancer I created has something I think looks like a sword.

Except that it *is* a flat, lifeless shield.
If it were actually a globe, then yeah, I could see that.
Would've been nice if, after unsheathing your weapon, it'll attach to your arm like a shield ... but that would look too much like Yu Gi Oh.
I think there was even concept art of it like that.
If you read the quest flavor text, it said an Astrologian's deck is comprised of 60 Cards. The ones you have swirling around it are your cards "In Play" and the Cards in the holster are reserves.
