Does anybody know whether the developers have ever discussed possible voice chat in the game?
I think it would be great, especially as I play with controller so switching to keyboard to type something is a PITA.

I can't recall where it was said, but I believe Yoshida stated they were not looking at this option so as not to 'alienate' players who don't want to. I guess they are worried people would force other players into voice chat. (please correct me if I am remembering wrong)
Personally I hated the idea of voice chat, but now I've been playing for awhile and have started coils, I can see the advantages (FF14 is my first MMO). Especially considering we have cross platform, Integrated would be easier for PS & PC players to communicate too.
In addition to those two responses, most FCs or players in general use a chat program like Mumble, Vent or TS anyway. We have several players who use TS and they play on Playstations. We also have users who play on PC WITH controllers.
There are enough voice chat solutions to not need it to be part of the game. Integrated voice chat just causes more problems than it solves. I'd rather choose the people I use voice chat with than have some screaming kid telling me what he did to my Mother every time I decide to do a quite DF run to finish off a roulette daily or something.
I'm not sure how it would alienate people. Most people on my data center are Japanese so I'm already alienated in text chat. In fact, I suspect I would do better over voice. At least they would hear my terrible pronunciation and use a tiny bit of English. People take it the wrong way if one uses the auto-translate phrases such as "I do not speak any Japanese" or "Do you speak English?".
I would never use it. My FC actually frowns upon voice chat for coils.
They would probably kick you faster when they hear you speak in English. You'd have an easier time learning to read Japanese and write in it. If they can't communicate with you then they usually just throw you out anyway.I'm not sure how it would alienate people. This really should be a priority :/ most FC have a mumble or a vent I know but ps4 users can have a hard time using that as not every one has a laptop and cell apps are spotty. Why not just implement it as FC only voice chat that way you connect to it in game and it promotes running things with FC. Plus they could charge for it as an adittional service priced the same as a vent server per month. Win win.
I've joined a couple PS4 Linkshells lookin to do this, but for some reason I only ever end up helping scrub noobs do stuff . . . who don't understand what they're doing. After I ended up in a party full of what sounded like 13 year olds I just lef the linkshells :/
