Thanks for these! Great reference for those of us searching for accurate period Mongolian names (otherwise I was gonna name my male Xaela Naranbataar - still not sure if that'll work). The heraldry.sca.org sites look like a fantastic resource.

I also found a couple sites:

    http://forums.stardock.com/4647

And this one is useful for those people looking to construct their own Mongolian-esque name:

And for the linguistics lovers among us:

I love how as a result of this, a lot of us are probably crashing into a lesson in Mongol history via these sites.

Did you know! Despite their unquestionably well-deserved reputation for indiscriminate brutality, the Mongol Horde of Genghis Khan's time passed laws granting women generally equivalent legal rights to men -- or at least, tried to, with mixed results. This included things such as the right to own property in their own name and the right to divorce. Double standards and expectations still existed, with consequences small and large for breaking them, but it's nonetheless generally believed to be true by historians. In this, they're rather similar to the ancient Norse; another far-ranging, oft-vilified culture, who actually had a very well-established and (for it's time) fair legal system.

A possible factor for this: Genghis Khan and his siblings were raised almost entirely by their single mom, Oulen of Olkhunut, who went on to become his top advisers throughout his reign.

(A strong, independent Mongol woman who don't need no man, so to speak)

Well Pastoralists tend to have a more hands on "everyone needs to do stuff" thing vs settled groups.

Very true! Though the Mongols at least tried to hold together a stable nation-based civilization.

It seems like the Xaela are really a far more one-for-one adaptation of a real-world culture than any of the other races, albeit through the high-fantasy lens. Not that it detracts.

Hasn't Garlemald conquered Othard, though? It seems like they'dve pulled a reverse-Genghis and get the clans to fight each other rather than acknowledge the common threat and snap them up when they down.

I wouldn't say they are one for one, nearly all the clans are references to other things. Afew are explicitly other horse nomads of the steppes but that's rather to be expected. They have plenty of Turk, Mongol, Hun etc in them plus what foreigners were saying about them and some Dune.

A "few" is generally known to be 2 to 5 (max). Most commonly a few is known as, 3. So a 12th-18th century timeline gives us a very wide range to chose from. Lot's of names fit the time period of 2 of the 3 you listed. Though, the Huns is being a bit dramatic lol.

I've been sort of wondering about this myself, with the new info out there. I'd actually think that the new Garlean authorities would be very sour on some of their subjects warring with each other constantly and would much prefer they settle down and become "productive". Yet another hook for why your character came to Eorzea, really, and there's already a ton.

    I found this database.

    Mongolian etymology

Since it's an etymology database, probably won't be able to get actual names/meanings that auto-translators will recognize, but maybe someone can get some use out of it.

Despite pages being numbered rather than lettered, it is still in alphabetical order, shouldn't be too hard to find a word that sounds like something you're looking for.

I used it to basically find a word close to my lalafell's name in middle or written mongolian and changed it a tiny bit. Sure, they're not really names, but I'm satisfied with what I got.

they made this so hard! I feel like the -meaning- of the words used is super important.. but most resources just list names without translations ( the random generator in game will be the same I'm sure)... and needless to say Mongolian stuff isn't that easy to come across in general.. At least in comparison to Japanese. Old school or not.
