I am not...however, I do own a couple of successful RL businesses and feel that I understand local economics quite well...however, I dont believe that is the only issue here.

I'm a software developer with over 18 years successful experience in UI design and system architecture. I think we're discussing usability here.

Anyway, as Roaran suggests...good ideas have no tendancy to only come from so called experts...so even with a high degree of experience I think being open minded or willing to listen is a good thing.

I think having a moogle house where you can buy/sell goods is a fantastic idea!

Small idea to have people that will use markets and those that prefer not to. You could have a universal broker that would allow players to get in and out of the system (*note broker ideas really only works well with a mailing system). You would restrict players from only being able to put up many things. So lets say 5 things. Each of these 5 things are then available until purchased. To give players an incentive to go to the market the broker will add a large markup. Now this indeed punishes the less wealthy players but in turn they are also sinking their money back into the game and not to players. So the whole system will only assist in speed but everyone looses in the transaction. So it will work just like a real pawn shop supporting people focusing on managing their market.

I'm not a major in economics, but I did take marketing and business management as part of my Digital Graphic Design major, and the OP has not stated anything that would be unreasonable. Linking the MWs of each city would at least give players a reason to place retainers in Limsa or Gridania, even if there was an additional surcharge to do so.

A video game with an economic system.

Said user interface directly relates to the economic balance of the game. More transparency and convenience => harder to compete in the play environment. Excessive accessibility does nothing but make it much harder to create opportunities for profit.

More transparency and accessibility are ALWAYS good things for any market. The only people who benefit from secrets or unknown information, are either a few people who, by luck, stumble upon them or people who use those secrets against the rest of us.

Supply will always meet demand if we're allowed to make our own prices. This is the greatest truth of economics. More accessibility and transparency is good for both producers and consumers as a whole. If it is harder to compete, then those who are least effecient drop out. Better that the more effecient producers gain from the consumer, so that the consumer can purchase more for less.

I just have to say though... "excessive accessibility" as you put it... Imagine in your life, someone determining, for example, that online shopping was too convenient and accessible. They say, "Online shopping puts retail outlets out of business, and destroys jobs." So, they outlaw online shopping forcing you to go to the store for everything.

Accessibility transforms economies for the better, ALWAYS.
