I dunno. With how low the cooldown on Spirit's Within is, they certainly seem 'holey' enough with a stab that powerful. Well, in terms of how many holes the enemy has when it is defeated.

Your wish has been granted in the expansion.

Riot blade and spirit's within.
theres your holeyness.
(on a more serious note, paladin is just another name for 'sultansworn.' we are the equivalent of a royal guard, not a knight wielding holy magic.)

You don't think it would be weird having a so called "holy cross" in a game where christianity doesn't exist?
Now, now... Let's not tap into "that" topic. A cross can symbolize anything.
Yes, it doesn't. The game stayed clear away from any of the popular religions we have, irl... as far as my knowledge of everything lore-related in the game.
Paladins, in the FF sense of the term, have always just been Fighters who get access to a handful of White Mage Skills. As people have already stated, another name for the Paladin class is Knight. The earliest example of this actually comes from the very first Final Fantasy, in which the Fighter class gained the first few White Mage spells upon gaining their advanced class which was called Knight.
They're called Knights (ナイト) - not Paladins - in Japanese. Paladin is actually a french word & title for "a chivalrous" knight" - seeing as they originally were a royal guard I think the term is fine.
Warrior is (戦士) - which is analogous to Guardian, Fighter, Soldier and (of course) Warrior in Japanese.
