A central point in the XIV rendered video, a place for adventurers to mingle with the crafters, and an all-around sound idea that was lost in the annals of history.
Does anyone remember back in the early SWG days when they had a cantina that actually had a use? Basically, you went out into the battlefield until your mind melted from the stress. Then you came to a cantina to get it healed (the only way it could be healed, mind you - ) was to have a nice drink and watch some dancing girls or listen to a musician.
It provided the perfect atmosphere to converse and meet people, a facet that many MMOs, okay all, lack now.
Bottom line, I believe a social element should have some consideration in XIV. Have characters get tired after a long time. Or, if you don't want to force them, have them stop in to receive buffs. Introduce the bard and dancer classes, and have that be their main breadwinner (working there, as in, their buff skills won't work outside of it.)
Have drinks that are only available in the tavern, to force people to go there to receive the unique buffs, or whatever.
Yes, I'm a big sissy that wants to talk to people, and I could just do it randomly in the streets. However, a justified place in the game - one with an actual purpose - would be just wonderful. I imagine a raid group stopping in for an hour long buff or so before going on a raid. I think it would be fun ... there goes the f word again.
Just a thought. I'll never understand why devs don't look more at the innovative ideas that old SWG game had. Yes it died, but in the beginning, there were some really good ideas flying around.
