There's a saying: 'A fool and his money are soon parted.' Luckily for SE, quite a few of them seem to be playing this game.

You mean from 20 to 200, but yeah your point still stands. Then they should've designed a system that is more manageable on the data side... A retainer alone equals a close to full character data thanks to appeareance and ventures.
There are various ways that are less storage intensive then retainers:
- Allow more (or better all) gear in Armoire.
- Craft Mat Tab - Save ItemID and Amount. (Look GW2)
- Higher Stack Size for Crafting Mats (WoW increased most crafting items from 99 to 250)![]()

I decided I won't be buying any more retainers than the 4 I already have. Inventory is a bit stressed, but that's because I'm a glamour addict. But it's not un-manageable. One rule I imposed on myself is only storing HQ versions of common lowbie crafting items (and even higher level ones) - because I'm either carrying the NQ version on hand for the most common things, or I can buy it from an NPC in about a minute if I really needed it. The exception is my giant pile of gems, ingots, and ores because I'm a primary goldsmither and one retainer is dedicated to holding all my rocks. (She also gets all my materia.)
4 retainers lets me have one of each gathering type and gives me adequate storage. I really don't need any more than that.
Because a massive amount of items has been added to the game (particularly for crafters) with no additional way of storing them except to pay a higher monthly subscription fee. It's kind of amusing to see all the supposed "rage quit on principle" posts. Why?
- Paying for extra retainers is not a change: it has been in the game for quite a while if not from launch.
- No one has to pay for the extra retainers: if you were enjoying the game without buying them before, you can keep enjoying it without buying them.
So previous to HW, we got two retainers for free and had the option to rent two more.
Now, we get two for free and have the option to rent six more. That's the only change.
What possible "principle" justifies quitting because the number you could rent went from 2 to 6?
Why is the annoyance surrounding that so hard for you to understand? You're acting like your statement covers all the changes, but it doesn't.
