Successful completion of the crafted item is determined by RNG on the server, but successful storage of that item on your character is handled by the synch process from your character to your server. 15 seconds is actually fairly slow for a database - most SQL applications measure it in miliseconds. But there are 4 million accounts, of which a million are logged in at any time, which is a million read/writes every 15 seconds.
I completely agree from a QoS perspective that it is unacceptable not to be able to get your lost rare item back. However, the solution should be to copy the data only when it needs to be copied. The system they have right now ends up copying an incredible amount of redundant or just useless data. Copying the entire data for safe measure every hour, combined with some situational saves in response to player milestones like crafting rare items would be a more ideal system. It would take a lot more thought and time to implement than a 15 second timer, though.

Looks like Yoshida was asked about this again yesterday, but seems like it's the same answer that we always get outside of 1 detail which is him saying that they're "It’s something we’re working on now" and "Right now, with Heavensward coming out we know that a lot of players are going to access the servers and there is going to be a lot of stress on the servers. To do something like this at launch would create an unstable environment."

...I swear I've not heard any dev of an online game complain this much about network traffic. And yeah, complete backups of everyone's everything, every 15 second - that is plain insane. (Guess there is one major potential reason for all those disconnects.) If they fail to realise this, idek what to say - and they apparently do fail to realise this, considering how they rather outed the option to have more space for money instead of prioritising that optimisation Yoshi talks about there. On a sidenote, I really am curious just how big is that "probably biggest" save data size per character, and what on earth they do to make it so big.

The ability to aquire more space should be offered by in-game quests or item turn-ins or some process in the game. Not by some Pay to Win strategy.

Or I'm also fine with a level 50 quest to aquire one more retainer.

Well that sounds ... better, I guess. And it also makes sense with huge server loads coming up and what not so lets see if this is just another empty promise once the servers calm down or even 3.1 releases. Remember the housing promises made by him? Yeah...

I do have to question why 6 paid retainers are perfectly ok with this server load yet giving players one more is just too much. No one is going to flood the retainer bell all of a sudden just because they get one more of them for free. Some of the more OCD hoarders might definitely do some major reorganizing but he's talking like the entire server will suddenly flood their retainers causing massive server crashes. I swear, hearing them talk about all these space and sever problems makes me think theyre running their servers on pentium 1 processors. Also why 15 seconds? Server crashes are rare ... 5 or ever 15 minutes of lost gameplay is nothing. Some players may lose some uber gear drop they just finished getting but its extremely rare. When was the last time the FFXIV servers crashed? Around release day maybe? None of mine ever did afaik.

Worse thing about all this is they're actually losing money from me for this. I would gladly pay the full sub price (standard) to be able to make mules for myself in the same server. But no, they feel the need make that all but impossible because "RMT" ... since theyve been doing such a great job of it until now.

This was never about RMT. They just want people to pay more money for the extra retainers.

That point is irrelevant since they made the armory system which allows you to play every class/job on one character only.
If you keep that in mind, the amount of data regarding gear, stats, levels, etc. will obviously be bigger than any other MMORPG which doesn't have that kind of system in place (implying that people are using alts and mules).

What needs to be compared here is the amount of data per account between games, not per character. If we compare that, I'm pretty sure that a WoW account is close (ifnot bigger) than a FFXIV account.

Would it work to convert all / some of the existing retainers on an account into free shared storage?

Currently we can have up to 8 characters per server = 16 retainers total without buying additional retainers on the mog station. Many of us are not using all 8 character slots on a server and it's annoying to pay for more retainers when we already have all that possible storage we can't access. It would be nice if all my characters on a server could access either:

    - 1 personal retainer, and up to 8 shared retainers

    or

    - up to 16 shared retainers

    instead of

    - 2 personal retainers each

Or perhaps the issue is more to do with how much the game needs to access (read / write) the data during play, than a simple case of storage space?

And is as a simple armory with a "collections" menu where you can keep all diferent armor and weapon sets can be allocated without using inventory space. Simple, doable, damn, most RPG have something like this and works like a charm. Why XIV can`t?
It's essential for me to collect the items that I truly want and discard the ones I do not. In every RPG I've ever played, I've despised having a bloated inventory full of crap and always did my best to keep it clean and lean. I will probably never need more than two retainers.

Not really. It creates loopholes for people who want to gear up a tank but play a dps while doing it. Creates huge imbalances with tanks/dps/healers from being able to switch around to any job so much. A new system of gearing up should have been created since this game mimics wow on such a huge level without having the same class system as wow. I know of statics that require you to have requirements of top end gear in multiple jobs to fill in gaps and creates the loop hole where you can play as a dps in raids and using master looter be given gear you did not deserve since you did not play that role.

At minimum it should have been like ff 11 where you had to go into your room to change jobs and not be allowed to roll on gear that was not your job at the time even as greed.
