Well that sounds ... better, I guess. And it also makes sense with huge server loads coming up and what not so lets see if this is just another empty promise once the servers calm down or even 3.1 releases. Remember the housing promises made by him? Yeah...

I do have to question why 6 paid retainers are perfectly ok with this server load yet giving players one more is just too much. No one is going to flood the retainer bell all of a sudden just because they get one more of them for free. Some of the more OCD hoarders might definitely do some major reorganizing but he's talking like the entire server will suddenly flood their retainers causing massive server crashes. I swear, hearing them talk about all these space and sever problems makes me think theyre running their servers on pentium 1 processors. Also why 15 seconds? Server crashes are rare ... 5 or ever 15 minutes of lost gameplay is nothing. Some players may lose some uber gear drop they just finished getting but its extremely rare. When was the last time the FFXIV servers crashed? Around release day maybe? None of mine ever did afaik.

Worse thing about all this is they're actually losing money from me for this. I would gladly pay the full sub price (standard) to be able to make mules for myself in the same server. But no, they feel the need make that all but impossible because "RMT" ... since theyve been doing such a great job of it until now.

The ability to aquire more space should be offered by in-game quests or item turn-ins or some process in the game. Not by some Pay to Win strategy.

Or I'm also fine with a level 50 quest to aquire one more retainer.

This was never about RMT. They just want people to pay more money for the extra retainers.

Would it work to convert all / some of the existing retainers on an account into free shared storage?

Currently we can have up to 8 characters per server = 16 retainers total without buying additional retainers on the mog station. Many of us are not using all 8 character slots on a server and it's annoying to pay for more retainers when we already have all that possible storage we can't access. It would be nice if all my characters on a server could access either:

- 1 personal retainer, and up to 8 shared retainers

or

- up to 16 shared retainers

instead of

- 2 personal retainers each

Or perhaps the issue is more to do with how much the game needs to access (read / write) the data during play, than a simple case of storage space?

Already two threads in here (that I saw anyway) asking about why it's not yet available in the Mog Station because they want to get them. Yeah.......... so marginal indeed. Absolutely no need. 2 free retainers when the game started to accommodate the space needed for storage. New expansion with more mats and items which should be accommodated with more storage space. If the only way for SE to recoup costs for more data on their servers is to force a monthly increase via paid retainers then that is their choice. I for one believe there should be an increase in space due to being forced to save new items. Since this will not be the case the only option I have is to not renew my monthly and also not purchase the expansion. There are other options besides this game to occupy my time.

2. No one has to pay for the extra retainers: if you were enjoying the game without buying them before, you can keep enjoying it without buying them.

So previous to HW, we got two retainers for free and had the option to rent two more.
Now, we get two for free and have the option to rent six more. That's the only change.

Because a massive amount of items has been added to the game (particularly for crafters) with no additional way of storing them except to pay a higher monthly subscription fee.

Why is the annoyance surrounding that so hard for you to understand? You're acting like your statement covers all the changes, but it doesn't.

4 million was the number of registered accounts. Subscription count is way lower, but I'm sure it has grown a lot with the coming Heavensward release and all of the return players.

Edit: Not that I'm disagreeing with your point; The forums are not a good point of reference for anything regarding majority/minority players.
