I generally just go out and gather all the things I need for a crafting project for the day.But why do you need an entire retainer for mats? The only mats I keep around are the rare/expensive ones that aren't easily obtained. Otherwise, I just buy what I need off the MB, craft whatever it is I wanted to craft, and then resell the rest. I don't keep mats precisely because they're a huge waste of inventory space when I can just go buy what I need when I need it.
Besides the point: What you buy, someone has stores of, ie likely mostly taking up some space in an inventory.

Oh, I keep some crafting mats in my inventory (not my retainer), usually the stuff I use a lot. I just can't understand keeping so much around that you have an entire retainer full.

Because I have all my gatherers leveled and it's a waste of money buying mats. It's also a waste of time goingout to gather only a specific amount exactly whenI need it. And I don't think you are considering people with all classes leveled - of course we have a lot of gear. But why do you need an entire retainer for mats? Sure, if I only had one or 2 classes leveled the current amount of space would be plenty. But with all 50s, it's far from it.

That may be the case on a large pop server, but on smaller ones, like my own, what you need is never on the market board. If you don't farm it, you better expect to pay way more than its worth. But why do you need an entire retainer for mats? I'm a bit offended by this whole thing really. The amount of content in this game is doubling, or at least that is what Yoshi P has said, and we are paying for the expansion, as well as the subscription cost. So why charge us even more? It's an insult to the entire player base.

I have four retainers. Currently, one is almost completely full of soldiery/HA gear, Levi weapons, Shiva weapons, etc that I was hanging onto until we can desynth it as well as a few glamour pieces that won't go into the Armoire as of yet, blank glamour prisms, and rare dyes. That one will be mostly empty once I login to Heavensward. One is full of materials that I commonly use for Culinarian crafts (I sell a lot of food). One is full of materials commonly used for crafting equipment (a wide selection of different leathers, lumbers, cloths, ingots, and other sundries). One is where I keep things like potions that I use regularly, demimateria, soldiery mats, seeds, soil, materia, carbontwine/coat... basically miscellaneous junk. I started storing a lot of stuff in the Free Company storage like a lot of the more common mats (peacock ore, etc) because I just don't have room.I'm honestly curious... people who have more than 2 retainers, what are you even storing on them? I ask because I have multiple gear sets (every single available set for DRG minus a few pieces here and there plus a bunch of sets for other jobs), multiple weapons (Primal & Coil), dyes (all of the retainer venture ones), glamour gear, rare/expensive crafting mats, and various and sundry other things on mine and I still have plenty of space left.
Honestly, the best part about having more than two retainers is the larger market presence you have.

Actually, now that you mention it, my inventory will go way down too because I have a bunch of HA/Levi/Shiva/Ramuh stuff sitting around that I greeded on thinking I could turn it in for seals. It seemed like a waste to ditch it when I knew they would give us the ability to turn it in eventually, but that will free up a considerable amount of space on my retainers.
And that space will be immediatly filled with Heavensward stuff like "Oh, nice lv55 bow I just dropped there. I'll hold on to it for when I'll be leveling my Bard".Actually, now that you mention it, my inventory will go way down too because I have a bunch of HA/Levi/Shiva/Ramuh stuff sitting around that I greeded on thinking I could turn it in for seals. Plus new mats.
Plus new Glamour items.
Plus new potential events items.
Plus all these desynth stuff you'll need to level up desynth.
Plus new housing items that don't fit in your house just yet.
Plus every leveling gear you'll need for non-50 classes/jobs.

Crap...didn't know I was forced to pay for extra retainers. Did not see this gun pointed at me to buy it. Woah...SE took me by surprise there.
