Yes this is what I mean...That's probably they can be doing something outside of the game that has guaranteed progress. Like work, errands, assignments, other entertainment. Getting some of that done is better than attempting a fight you're very sure you won't win with that group.
Boss remaining HP on wipe is sometimes not indicative of the group's potential clearing ability either. Sometimes there are things that people notice that you don't that makes them believe the group is not going to be able to clear it. Maybe you thought the party looked pretty much in good health until that 20% but that person who quit saw that that 20% took too long and the party wouldnt make it at that pace (which is harder to rectify since it's about dps). Maybe they saw someone performing abyssmally and either didn't want to help that player win or didn't want to bother with the drama for pointing it out if that player is causing the wipe or possible wipe.
