About the chat filter...

Following up on a verbal harassment report I had to make...
I asked the very polite Gm Unurlotho why certain words were not in the chat filter and they suggested I start a discussion on the official forums. I wasn't sure where to post this, but I believe Localization is relevant here. Since the game was translated from Japanese to English it is very possible the Japanese culture does not find the same words offensive.

That said, I'll start with a story. I was talking to another FC member once and I asked "How silly, why is "penis" filtered but "dick" isn't?" to which the other person replied "Because everyone named "Richard" would be mad." and we laughed about it. Alright, so "Dick" could be somebody's name, that's fair.

Then we have words like "bitch". Formally this word means a female dog/wolf/fox/otter. Realistically people are using it as slang to insult other people. While I am sure there are people that do use the word formally, like dog breeders for example, I think there are more people likely to use it as an insult... especially in an MMORPG. The argument could be made about "dick" as well.

I want this to be an open discussion and not at all a "Wah, somebody in DF called me a bitch" thread so I'll go ahead and ask: What other words aren't covered by the chat filter do you find offensive?

My own answer would easily be "rape". It is a word that will instantly trigger painful memories for certain people. I believe they should have the option to not have to deal with that in an environment that is supposed to be fun.

Personally I never use any kind of chat filter (though I also never use any words to insult other people like that, so...) though I'd understand why people would want a chat filter. Maybe then can make it so you can add so many words to your own? Not like, a million or else it'd probably be too complicated, but your own list of words you just don't want to see.

That is a great idea. To add onto it, I recall being a forum admin once and thought it was really cool that you could set words to replace other words. It would be great if that was an option as well. For example, if you use the filter and don't want to see "Oh, ????." (which is what the current filter looks like...) you could set the filtered word as something relevant and see "Oh, poop." instead. Still gets the point across without being foul.

Alas, we don't even have a way to search things (like Crafting Log, Inventory, Retainers, etc) via text input so I don't see this being a thing...
