Is this normal as a melee to have to spam a skill for the hit detection to work?

I mean, often I'm RIGHT ON TOP OF A TARGET yet I have to spam a skill to register it and execute it.

And yeah, I am facing my target as well.

Playing on PC with full keybinds and moving with mouse, so reactivity isn't the problem here obviously.

That makes pvp particularily boring (in addition to waiting hours for a 10 minutes aoe festival)

Nope, it's just latency. Playing with a VPN makes it much more bearable howerever. I use WTFast personally.

Can't wait for the european datacenter.

Right I forgot that our so-called "European" DataCenter is located in Canada with +200 ms latency ...

I noticed that it takes half a second, up to a full second for the platform jump to register too. Like, my character is 5 yards away past the platform jump when it finally get catapulted 0_0

In the end, if my target isn't standing still like a sitting duck, my attacks never register T_T

Is there a source of that european datacenter announcement? When will that be?

I've been playing pvp here for quite some time now and this has always been such a huge, and discouraging handicap for me. I've spent a massive amount of time trying to figure out what causes it and how to cut down on it from happening.

It comes down to a few issues, the biggest is of course latency and the delay before damage is actually applied. Your problem is clearly that of latency, but I'm gonna just list a few more of the reasons this happens.

Most mmo's I've played, when you use a physical skill, the skill will hit basically right away. But in FF 14, that skill needs to complete most of it's animation before it is applied. The game is also quite unforgiving in terms of angles/range.
So if you start up butchers block and you are 2y away, and your opponent moves slightly to the left and you end up at 4y away.. the animation will cut out ending up in you just doing nothing. This can repeat over and over.

Due to the nature and dynamics of the system, this situation is often times worsened due to sprint.

    I'll give you an example.

Say you are a Paladin vs a Summoner. He has all his dot's up on you and is about 7y away. If the situation stays like this all he needs to do is maintain the current distance to kite you to death. You have no gap closers or ranged snares, so your counter? Your counter is sprint, but sprint increases your movement speed. The problem with this? Well as I said, your angle/range needs to be just right for your animation to complete for your attack to hit. But due to the fact that you're now moving at much a greater speed, if you slightly veer to the left, you can end up completely outside of the angle/range you need to be in for your attack to complete against your opponent. Now throw in a sprinting opponent, he slightly veers to the left, you the right, no chance you are landing that hit. (There is a semi counter to this however. Lockon mode. But for me personally, the camera just makes the experience even more frustrating) And of course if you throw poor latency into the mix, the problem just becomes 10x worse.

I've been playing MMO's for well over a decade and I have never, ever felt so handicapped by ping as I do here.

I believe all that would be needed to fix this situation is to change attacks so that once they start their animation, they finish it and apply damage... none of this whiffing stuff. Or just makes it so attacks apply their damage the moment the animation starts, rather than close to the end.

If you're hellbent on focusing one specific target, I recommend using the lock-on camera feature. It is toggle-able so you can use a keybind to turn it on and off quickly (I use the letter G on my keyboard, not sure if this is default?). I find that lock camera is extremely useful for melees when focusing one specific target. Then I just have to "hold forward" and I will always run towards the target, both keeping within range and also facing the right way. It's actually extra work to disengage (have to toggle it off to run effectively), but in my opinion it's worth it if I'm going HAM on a specific target anyway. You can really tell who the inexperienced melee players are when you run circles around them and they stand still doing nothing wondering why their skills aren't going off. Locking on is a good, easy, and effective way of combating this.

    Also as mentioned, lag.
