yeah they had some that did get banned over it. if they knew you had leveled up using that exploit they would confront you about it. if you admitted doing it they removed the ranks you had gained. if you denied it they banned your account. the problem was they had to be 100% sure that you had done it or they didn't do anything.

I did. I remember quite a few people being banned because they didn't come forward and report themselves.
If you reported yourself though you just had your rank reduced.
Do you remember when the first wave of people hit rank 50 about 5~ weeks after launch then most of them quit because there was nothing to do except level another class?
No, AFTER they fixed the power-leveling version of it, the best way to get skill points on mages was cure spam, in this case AoE healing because it gave more chances to heal(each person could give skill points)
The power-leveling version was basically be a cluster of mages all spamming AoE cures for a couple hours then they were all 50. It was later nerfed but healing was still the best way to level mages

Sounds a bit odd, but it reminded me of the very first time I played FFXI. I was playing a Thief and my friend was some kind of healer/buffer class (dunno which one it was). Whilst i fought stuff he just kept healing and buffing me, when I asked what he was doing he just went "powerleveling". Dunno if he meant me or him though... either way it made the fights boring. No, AFTER they fixed the power-leveling version of it, the best way to get skill points on mages was cure spam, in this case AoE healing because it gave more chances to heal(each person could give skill points)

I have 8 crafts at 50. All I did was watch T.V. and spam standard for easy mode synths. Enjoy leveling those crafts in 1.19 and beyond everyone!
