That really is a wall of text.Greetings!
The entire post in it's Wall-o-Text glory can be found here.
It is in said post that Yoshida makes a comment regarding implementation items such as Excalibur (often classified as relic weapons) sometime in the far future.
It is after reading the post in it's entirety that I wonder how such items shall be obtained by the player base.
I personally liked the lore & quests associated with trying to obtain a relic weapon in a Final Fantasy title. It was a long & grueling process, but in the end I felt a sense of accomplishment because I obtained an item unlike anything else in the game (Or in FF11 terms, an item that very few people had).
That being said, how would you like these relic items to be obtained if you had a say?
Instanced dungeons? Crafted from rare items? Or that long & grueling process that gave meaning to the word "relic"? Or something else?
Also, it was posted at 3:27 am???
As for relics/rare equipment.
Since we have such a diverse crafting system, they could do something such as each boss randomly drops a part for some kind of special equipment. all his drops are special equipment drops, the one he drops is random.
Then there will be other bosses that also do this.
Eventually if you can obtain all of the parts for the item, it can be crafted/rebuilt into it's original super awesome magical form.
E.G/
Boss 1 - Excalibur handle
Boss 2 - Excalibur blade
Boss 3 - Excalibur grip
Synthesis handle + blade + grip = Excalibur sword.
The only problem is if you haven't levelled the craft required you'd need someone else to do it, then there'd be the problem of it may become untradable when created or the crafter may steal it. Can't think of a way around that problem yet though...
If possible there should be an option to obtain it without a colossal waste of money, however no matter how difficult it is to obtain, we know there will be entire LS doing it on rotation, so the colossal waste of money and resources option is probably still the best one.
This.I think it'd be interesting if some of the relics would be obtained by first finding it broken and have to go through multiple steps to get it fixed up as opposed to just getting it as a rare drop from a chest or mob.
For example lets say to build Excalibur, you'd have to clear a fortress of monsters to find a chest that has a chance to give a Broken Sword Hilt. It would be worthless to sell, and there wouldn't be any really obvious clues as to what to do with it. But if you talk to the right NPCs in the world, you would find out that it was once part of a legendary sword. You would also find out that you need to search for certain metals and parts in order to fix it up, which leads to more dungeon crawling and searching.
Once you've gathered the parts, the relic item may be repaired by a legendary NPC of sorts. If we wanted it to be really interesting, under the guidance of this legendary NPC it could be revealed that the relic requires multiple crafters to put repair, and this would trigger a chance to set up a group crafting session to put the item together.
And some of the parts could even be obtainable only by spending guildmarks, for example.
You had help then or where very rich, the alexandrite alone would take years was what 30,000 alexandrite and you averaged 50-100 a run if you where lucky (you could buy them but in the hayday of XI they where 5k a pop so 150million gil worth) . On top of that you needed to do nyzul, all the quest, all the assaults twice, missions, kill the ZNMs actully get the drops (takes a group and prevents them from fighting a boss)
Anything is easy with help, my linkshell was producing a full relic every 1 1/2 months for awhile until the abysea killed off any form of money making. With LS help it is doable in a decent time, alone... well yea good luck.
My ls was obscenely wealthy they provided everything for there ls members HQ abj armor etc, we also sold a considerable amount of ridills/hauberks/subligars/sea torques/drops for ludacris amounts of gil and pretty well everyone in ls had multiple crafts lvled besided me i had 94 woodworking and just sold arrows/quivers on the side. I hardly bought any alexandrite my ls bought and gave it to me the problem was getting enough and getting a Tinnin fang... My ls had multiple relics in the dozens and at least 8 mythics counting mine that i remember and oh man .... everyone had at least 2 empy weapons lol. I soloed/duoed so many sobeks on pup/nin i still have night terrors about it. But yeah i would have never gotten a mythic had it not been for the generosity of my LS i didnt even request one i was just on the list.
Get relic.
Attempt double materia.
Break relic.
Rage.
Did you have a Relic weapon? Because I did and it didn't feel like an accomplishment, it felt like a massive waste of time/gil.
The weapon was good but the Dynamis currency system was the stupidest grind I've ever experienced in endgame. Weapons like that should require multiple drops, multiple part quests, many tough fights anything but a faction or currency grind!
Obtaining a black belt was so much more satisfying because it involved getting drops from all the kings. Getting a Relic weapon just meant you were filthy rich/ran Dynamis for much longer than anyone in their right mind should have.
that post just makes me sad in general, all i take from it is blah blah, not gonna have any real large scale events, blah blah only small man dungeon, blah blah ..all your gears will become useless by time u get it, blah blah, but hardcore will be bored waiting for more dungeon, blah blah.
as for relics i want them to be hard as crap to get, though i didn't like how we got them in dynamisis coins ...i think with the time i put into the game and the amount of dynamisis i did in my years i could of easily had like 5of em but didin't bother with one. so yeah i want the huge full linkshell events but i don't want to be handing over my coins for 5years to others. so something inbetween that where it still takes years but don't take politics to get.
Make NPCs sell them for 500 million gil.

Alot of good idea's in here... all for long and difficult but 11 was a bit TOO long and hard, some stuff taking half a year or more to get is crazy. A hardcore player should be able to get a relic imo in a good 2-3 months time frame. As long as it doesn't become dependent on gil/currency either I think these idea's mixed in with alot of what 11 did (minus all the mad gil/currency requirements or grinds) + alot of idea's in here would be great! Hopefully this time though if relic weapons give ws's or other such abilities they are by far the most badass and best in the game unlike 11's which rarely were(most were downright laughable in looks and dmg)... At the very least I'm sure Yoshi would make em very flashy!
