They are the ultimate weapon in all Final Fantasy more or less, and they should remain that way.

They should outclass anything else in that weapon class by a decent margin and should remain the top weapon for the duration of the game... with that being said they should be seen as near impossible to obtain. It should take a hardcore player years if they get it by themselves and it should give a hardcore guild a target to work towards (assuming you have a guild that helps get them).

It should be a quest based item, but the quest should be something that is really hard, really long, and has significant barriers. I would like something like mythics in XI, the weapon required a lot of quest done and a lot of items collected. It was something that would take the normal hardcore player easily over a year and a half to finish.
I really don't want to fork over millions of gil or spend even a year to get a relic item, but you are right about earning an relic weapon to be note worthy an uncommon to the pleasing eye. However, it's too early to even talking about relics since there is no level cap and the game is still in develop process. I will say though I hope they make it where it doesn't require such a time that would affect our living lives.
