This Just In: Ifrit HM Now Requires i110

I just need to rant somewhere. I just had the absolute worst experience with Ifrit HM when I was going to do an episode for that battle for my channel. Just for reference, my non-LP WAR is around i118 and I pretty much do everything on my tank, so I have some experience with how to tank.

And before anyone bothers, yes, I will accept if you want to tell me I am whining, am a crybaby, need to lrn2play, some n00b that wants everything handed to them, come up with whatever insult you feel like. I'm not going to argue despite that I actually disagree. I'm posting because I just need to vent and that's all I care about.

So I'm freshly 50. I'm not horribly geared, i67 for an i49 battle. The other tank was actually lower than I was, but the fight starts with the DRG pulling, and then running around like an idiot, making it difficult (No, I don't have Provoke, yes, I should have it, but again, IT'S IFRIT HM. When was the last time you had to use Provoke?) so everything is already going to hell from the start.

So the other tank started yelling at me for not having Provoke. Fine, whatever. They kept losing hate anyways because Provoke won't really make a difference when everyone is over 40 ilvls higher than you. I say that, but I was 100% confident I could've held it if the damn DRG didn't decide he wanted to pull. I was just waiting for Protect.

So as the fight went on, the DPS started telling me off because they had more HP than I did, that I was bad, and that I should get my i110 gear before I even try again.

Just...ugh. Worst experience I've ever had in the game. We nearly wiped even, I had to tell healers twice to use the LB, because they ignored me, despite the fact that all of the DPS were down. So their precious "more HP than me" didn't help them anyways.

Basically what I'm saying is, if you want to pull it, you get to tank the damn thing. It doesn't even take Darklight gear to down Ifrit HM, so there's no reason to demand everyone have i110 gear for it (Why the hell would anyone do it outside of roulette if they weren't trying to get the weapon to upgrade?). And if I ever lead a raid group, if I rewatched the part of the video I did record before I cut it off, I would never, ever trust you in my raids because you're bad if you need that high of ilvl before doing the biggest joke fight in the game.

Okay, I'm done. Don't feel much better, but meh. It's out there now.

When I tank and dps pull, they can keep it. If the other tank is hot to pull and they aren't dcing left and right and know their role, they can keep it if there isn't a swap mechanic. Yes, your situation does suck, but you have to be prepared for the ****storm our community is going to bring when the rest of your party outgears you by a lot, it's going to be a pain for you to hold and most people are not going to hold back from ridiculing you. You also know if you tank you should have provoke. It's unfortunate but I think you've at least come to grips with what went wrong and what you can fix on your end. Just chalk it up to a bad experience and move on.

This. Nothing discourages bad habits like consequences for their actions. They learn fast.

If a dragoon can tank titan hm due to the same issue of badly geared tanks clearly the group you had was already bad regardless of ilvl either that or your healers weren't geared to end up with half the group dead and even then your dps must have been playing with one hand to take so much damage to die at that ilvl.

Unfortunately as a tank (and to some extent a healer) you will be held to a higher level of expectation by other players OP. I'm sure you're already aware of that, and yes it does suck, but there's really not much to be done about it. Your best bet as a fledgling tank is to try and play with friends or FC members to limit your exposure to players that will pick up on the disparity in iLvl. It would indeed help if fewer players were so hostile and impatient though.

Hopefully NINs will be able to assist with this situation going forward in 3.0 since they'll be able to transfer enmity now. I'm interested to see how the community responds to that though as NINs will actually be partially responsible for keeping the tanks on top of the hate list. We might start seeing NINs blamed for tanking fails. :P

It's my fault, at least partially. Yoshida is taking revenge on all the tank mains who switched to Ninja at 2.4.

There's not a lot you can do about gear, really. "Gear up" requires you to participate in content in order to do so, and people need to get over themselves on that. Especially on content that can be reasonably cleared at literally less than half the item level possible.

If there's DPS so highly geared that it's impossible for you to hold aggro against them chances are those DPS also have so much extra HP that they can handle the oncoming assault, and so they can step up and tank. I've tanked Titan HM as a squishy-ass white mage because my healing was outpacing what two fresh i50-i60 tanks could output one time, and it was just easier for me to sit there and spam cures/regens on myself the entire fight and hold aggro that way. That was how heavily I overgeared it.

People can deal when they get tanks that aren't as highly geared as they are, and if they don't want to deal they're babies.

It's an unfortunate side-effect of vertical progression, as well as the general overgearness that people get used to so close to the expansion. Nevertheless, given the requirement of HM Ifrit for the story, it's something that must be done (it gets worse with HM Garuda and especially HM Titan). Although honestly I just did main story scenarios for a while before I attempted to progress further; at this point it in time, it may be better just to find FC mates to do it with. You'll have more fun, I think.
