Can mineral water be gathered?

Greetings!

I'm just starting to discover some of the crafting jobs and I've noticed that many raw materials for crafting can be gathered. I've searched google extensively and could only see that mineral water can be purchased from the vendor?

It this the only place to obtain it, or can I gather it somewhere?

Mineral water can only be bought from vendors. It can't be mined, harvested, desynthed for, obtained from a mob drop, or gained as a reward from any kind of quest or duty. It costs 4 gil at the tradecraft vendors in the three main cities, at the Culinarian's Guild supplier, and at private vendors in player housing. http://ffxiv.gamerescape.com/wiki/Mineral_Water

You can only buy it. It costs nothing really, not worth the time to gather it anyway.

A good source for checking what can be bought, what can be gathered, what comes from mob drops, etc, is the Eorzea Database found in the "Play Guide" section of Lodestone. Compare its page for Mineral Water with its page for Bone Chips for example. You'll see that while they both list which NPCs sell it and what crafting recipes use it, the Bone Chip listing also shows what mobs drop it, and (at the bottom, below the crafting recipes) that it can be gathered by Miners at level 5 nodes in the Spineless Basin area of Central Thanalan. Similarly, if there were any quests that rewarded either of them, those would be listed as well.

You can look for items by category, or use the "Advanced Search" button to look for them by name. Plus, it will link between things like craftable items to their recipes to the locations for obtaining items used in those recipes, etc.

There's also an app for iOS and Android called Libra Eorzea, which has the same data formatted for mobile devices. Both the Eorzea Database and Libra Eorzea are maintained by SE and kept up to date as changes and additions are made to the game.
