Just make it so free trial accounts can't send friend requests

I don't think they can now. At least that's what I've heard. (But if I'm wrong and those can be sent from free trial accounts, then yes, I'd agree they shouldn't be able to.)

or have players making new characters win a game of Triple Triad, or some ARR related mini game to confirm they're not a bot.

Now that's an interesting idea. But I'm not sure how much it would take to script a bot to win at triple triad. I'm sure given a little time the RMT companies would manage it. (Chocobo racing is already bot-able, but that's largely because it doesn't require actually winning.)
