Steam pre-reg codes not cross-compatable with Windows version registration

This is one part info, one part "SE, this is silly, you should change this."

I bought the boxed Windows version of FFXIV 1.0, since there was no Steam version. Hence, when I registered my code, it determined that I was playing that way.

I later played on PS3 and later through Steam when I got back into the game. While yes, I could've just downloaded the ARR client for free, I got it on Steam because I figured it'd be best for expansions so they auto-update the game.

    HA!

While yes, it will download the expansion properly, what they don't tell you is that if you used a non-Steam code attached to a Windows registration, you have to continue not using the Steam version.

To summarize, despite the fact that I ordered it through Steam, where I have a legit copy of the game through Steam, I still have to go and buy another copy so I can register AND keep it on Steam if I need it for whatever reason. Not to mention that I'm also getting the PS3 copy just to keep that updated in the event my computer dies, so that makes three copies of the game I have to buy. Not cool, man.

I gave leniency to SE when they announced that you would need to use PS3 codes with PS3 codes, and PS4 codes with PS4 codes, but I draw the line at the lack of Steam codes being cross-compatibile for Windows codes.

This is just...frustrating. SE, come on, really?

This seems like an issue that crosses between Steam and SE's interactions. If it were up to SE, they'd have it as one product and one registration.
But nope, Steam and Sony want their cut of the cake too.

It's so stupid and has too many problem. I own 2.0 on both Windows and Steam and now considering to just get out of Steam.

I do find it bizarre that it's separated so much. They're even separating the Mac version, requiring you to repurchase it again to play it on Mac.

To give some examples, I bought Rift on PC, and can play it on Steam by simply downloading it. I can then play on or off Steam without any issues. I bought WoW on PC, but I can play it on PC or Mac by simply downloading it. I don't have to buy it again.

I'm pretty sure nearly every MMO is this way, except FFXIV, and I don't quite understand why.

Euhm... not to play the devil's advocate, but they have said / it's been well-known for quite a while that Steam and non-Steam are not cross-compatible. Not since 1.0, of course, but yeah, since we have a Steam version, sure.

I agree that doesn't make it any less frustrating and annoying, but it's not a new thing.

Wasn't aware of the Steam and non-Steam, I knew about the console differences. Still, it's a pretty big hurt for people who weren't able to use Steam to get it, whether a transfer from Legacy or maybe adding it to other regions later.

That is inaccurate. When Rift was P2P, you had to buy the steam version to play on steam. And all steam versions were locked to steam only, having their own expansion too (even their own bonus).

You can link your launcher to Steam but it wouldn't have any of the features you would have if you bought Rift from Steam.

Of course, now it's different since Rift is F2P but you definitely needed to buy Rift on Steam back when it was P2P. However, if you play Rift through Steam now, you can't buy credits using a Trion account but only through Steam Wallet. Steam definitely imposes restrictions on non-steam versions.

Steam vs non-steam PC has even more restriction than PC vs Console.

What, really? Isn't the Mac version just the Windows version running some form of WINE? I didn't know it was possible to milk the whole separate platforms this much.

I bought and play FFXIV: A Realm Reborn on Steam. Do I need to purchase Heavensward on Steam to upgrade my account?
Global: Yes, you do as the Steam and Windows versions of A Realm Reborn have different play entitlements. The registration code that comes with the purchase of the Steam version of FINAL FANTASY XIV: A Realm Reborn is a Steam-specific play entitlement. If you purchased the game via Steam and set up your service account using the Steam-included code then you cannot use a non-Steam version of Heavensward to add the expansion to your existing account.
