This makes perfect since. I did the same thing.If you didn't use the Steam code at your original registration, it won't let you redeem it the Steam code. They're incompatable. A Windows code needs to have a Windows code, while Steam code has to use the Steam code.
Hopefully that makes sense.
Maybe this will help:
I purchased the game when 1.0 was released. It wasn't on Steam back then, so I registered with the code that came in the box.
I later purchased it on Steam for ease of installation. The Steam registration code for ARR is still available to me should I ever want to.
Because I used the code for 1.0, again with it not being available on Steam, I HAVE to use the code for the pre-order of the Windows version of the game, and Steam is incompatible.
So what I'm going to need to do is just cancel my pre-order on steam, and pick up with Windows PC download version.
