Anyone install FFXIV on Windows 8 dev preview?

I've been feeling lazy this development cycle, so I have not installed it myself. As such, I only have screenshots and a few press releases to go on, but it looks like they have removed the single largest step forward in User Interactivity that Windows 7 made. Namely the Start Menu Search. Seriously, I use that thing for everything - forgot what folder a file is in, type the name; don't want to dig down to a game buried deep in a folder, search for it. Unless there is some analog I haven't seen in screenshots, I'm afraid I'm too set in my ways to change my organization just to accommodate them taking out a perfectly useful function.

The start menu search is there. There's just no obvious field for it..


Press the windows key to bring up start and begin typing, the search results show immediately and then divided by files, applications, and system settings.

For Example:
I type "Fantasy Fantasy" at the start menu. The first default field is the applications, which will show Final Fantasy XIV immediately. Then if i were to hit the down key or click on the "Files" tab it will show all of the Final Fantasy audio tracks/folders.

The other is somewhat legit. the start menu can become clumbersome with when installing alot of games, but this is remedied by simply typing the title of the game you wish to play.

The comment on it harder for OC'd CPUs alot not a big deal. If it's not stable in Win8, guess what, it's not stable on Win7 either.

Hmm, in that case, I shall perhaps have to try it at some point. I'm not afraid to try new things just because most people don't like them (though I'll admit I never did upgrade to Vista). It's just that I do not like to take steps backwards, hence my previous post. That being said, I just finally got my computer running just the way I like it; I'm hesitant to tear it all down and start from scratch with a new OS. I suppose I could set up a new partition, but I'm running out of space... Could buy a new harddrive... /em walks off mumbling to himself.

it's not the final build, it's a beta build that expires next year.

It says right at the top it's a Release Preview. Previews and such are always free, with the intent of making you want to buy either a full copy or upgrade copy when it comes out. Free samples.

I've been testing windows 8 on laptops, tablets, and touchscreen devices for the past year. Click the desktop tile and it's the same look and feel. It works fairly well. DP was pretty bad compared to CP and RP. However they run pretty damned well these days. Metro takes some getting used to but i seldom use it, so it's not a big deal to me.

Also I glanced at the kotaku article. Their complaint means it's bad for game developers because they have to code more. not bad for gamers themselves.

Maybe you should try it yourself. or don't. I don't care. But posting an opinion of something without trying it is kind of douchy.

Tbh, the biggest problem with windows 8 is that for desktop users, it's an update for the sake of an update. There is nothing wrong with windows 7. It's not like going from Vista to 7. At least vista tried to make some improvements over XP, it failed, but at least it tried. To get the most out of 8 on a desktop, you have to side step the new features to get functionality similar to 7. To what end?

Obviously that's not the case on a tablet, I'm actually all for it on a tablet. I'll be buying the Surface just as soon as I can get my hands on one.

that's not quite right tbh. Yes, there is nothing wrong about win7, and personally, I'm going to stick with it till the end despite having a free key from msdnaa.

There are however multiple improvements win8 brings to the "legacy" UI, like the new task manager, rewritten network stack, new file transfers and for some, the new explorer. Oh and about 10 sec faster boot.

For me however, it doesn't outweigh the inconsistency between metro and aero. Ever tried having your taskbar other than in the default position? It's really ridiculous how you sometimes click on an icon on the left of the screen to see the metro panel open on the right.

They should have made metro run inside aero, not vice versa.
