I have 1 retainer for food stuffs 1 retainer for gear/materia and 1 for all other crafting mats. Keep only what I need for level 50+ crafts, and nq items I use consistently. Sell everything else. I also don't see anyone talking about thSearch function. It not only tells you which retainer has the item but which bag the item is in.

If you're simply lacking retainer spaces, this will help tremendously.

I think of it this way, if the price of an item is pretty much standardized, (many low lvl mats on my server are in the 150-250 range and do not fluctuate much) then I'm basically paying a 5% fee to keep it "stored" and I can buy it back for about the same price in the future.
