This is not forcing anyone to change anything. unless they choose so.

you're arguing that all 12 of them would opt for this - which kind of supports my idea that people don't give two *** about surnames and would - in an ideal world - only have 1 name unique to them.

I'm asking for that. And if you can't invent something 'unique' other than Alucard then you're a *** tool lol. OR you have the option of a last name. Everyone is happy.

I guess if it was optional, then it could work.

Maybe they could implement a command "/display surname off"

This way, for all intents and purposes, you would only have one name. Even though technically (according to the server database) you actually had two names.

The issue of course would still persist for sending tells to people. And also there would be a possibility of running into two people with the same first name, both with /display surname set to off.

Okay so basically this idea doesn't work.

    Practically speaking.

    /tell User Twentyeleven

    would be different from

    /tell Usertwenty Eleven

    as would be different from

    /tell Usertwentyeleven

I really don't see an issue. The test server supports single named characters.

I was merely thinking aloud in my above post. A /display surname off command wouldn't work for obvious reason that you wouldn't be able to /tell people if you only knew their first name and not their surname.

The only way the option to have one name could work is if they gave people option at character creation to have one, two, maybe evenTHREE names.

But I guess SE didn't want to give people option like this because then those who choose to have only one name will have a perceived advantage over others (more convenient to /tell them and they also "look" more original).

Wow the first person to hint at this.

I admit the option to turn of last names would be complicated, but theres no reason why it should interfere with the chat system, even with singular named character running about.

Full target name appears upon selecting them, right?

Most people on this forum are pretty irrational like that and can't have a discussion.
