also some reference names lose their awesomeness with a lack of surname. For instance, I saw someone with a character named Rebecca Miyamoto, a clever choice of name as it's the main character of an anime called Pani Poni Dash that was published by Square Enix. without a surname, she just becomes Rebecca, and the joke is lost.
Well, there is only a little reading required if say, the surname wasn't there, she would just spell itoutlikethisno?
As people generally tend to do that anyway, with or without a surname.

No, no, and no. First of all they'd have to force multiple people to change their names, and I doubt anyone wants to do that. And I love my last name.
I'm 100% against removal of surname. I like my surname and while I don't care much about making them optional in the future, removing them would just cause too much trouble since a lot of people are already using the same first name.
Every once in a while someone feels the necessity to open a thread to remove surnames for some reason.
Not gonna happen.
