Personally I suggest thaumaturge / black mage, it's ranged and a good DPS job. You get single mob DPS, AoE (many) mobs DPS, CC (Sleep), wards that protect you. So you can handle one mob, many mobs, you can sleep them, use wards to protect yourself, etc. I did the main story on my black mage and it makes it easier.
