I'm not sure we'll be able to trade in old Tomestones for new ones in the expansion. In all previous cases where we could trade in currency, both currencies were for the same level. In the expansion one currency will be for level 50 gear and the other for level 60 gear, I could see why Square wouldn't have a trade in feature in that case.

Any gear you plan on getting now will have an equivalent dropped in a dungeon for 0 Poetics, so I'd suggest saving them for Poetic weapons on DRK/AST/MCH if you plan to play them. If not, still would likely be better to save them incase they're used to purchase the mats for crafted gear or w/e.

IF you plan on leveling some of the new classes, depending on which one. Buy the gear relevant to the one you're leveling

It kind of doesn't matter. Solidarity replaced Mythology, and Mythology was converted 3:1 for Poetics I think. If anything once Law gets released. They'll replace Solidarity with poetics and convert remaining Solidarity into Law. If anything get your books, get your spring water and have Solidarity caped. Then your good for whenever they decide to add the new Tomestones.

Otherwise I'm just demon farming misc parts and Solidarity for other jobs until Poetic farming speeds up.

There's no reason to keep them. Even if Poetics can be converted to Law, the rate would be so low that it's just not worth the trouble to hold out. Even if you had like 2000 Poetics, it will probably be worth at most 2 entry end-game dungeon runs at level 60. If you need something now, get it. If not, you might as well not bother with the effort of earning those Poetics.

Personally I'm just spending everything to have a full set of 130 (well except a ring) for my two main roles (tank & healer), as I plan to level up DRK and AST in 3.0 anyway, and this little boost at 50 would be a good breather for then.

Myth was converted into Soldiery (just like Philo was converted into Myth). Lowest has always been converted into the next one up. Soldiery may be converted to Poetics around launch, if they are doing away with Soldiery and not keeing it around for ARR players.

If they do not plan on keeping Poetics either, then that will be converted to the lower of the two new currencies. I really can't see them converting it into the highest.

Personally I think Sol will be done away with and Poetics will stay around as an extra way to help gear up players going through the 2.0-2.55 main story quests.

Guess it only matters to save them for people that are leveling new jobs as their first thing when xpac comes out.

I'm just going to level few of my current ones to 60 and mess around in the new end game first. By then I'll probably will have more than enough tomes for whatever new job I would want to level.

As for currency conversion, it is only done when the currency is phased out.
If poetic is phases out you just get a little head start on the new currency (uncapped one) - which probably isn't worth much more than a few dungeon runs at 60 (and you won't be using "poetics" for ironwork weapons but the new currency).

Possibly soldiery will disappear and be converted to poetics, but most likely poetics will remains as they're 10 levels below the new tomes and are a part of ARR content (I'm not sure who would do this, but I'd imagine there might be some people who don't buy the expansion but still play and they'll need something to earn).

Since poetics are likely here to stay (at least for now), spending them now or later makes little difference as long as you don't hit the cap (if you're in danger of that weapon tokens for new or future jobs are a good investment). New crafting items will probably be added to poetics that you might want, so if you more or less have your fill of gear that might be something to save for. It's unlikely that poetics will see any new equipment or conversion into another currency though.

Seeing in the benchmark ironwork weapons for the new jobs and the new tome will most likely give new lv60 weapons and not old lv 50 weapons, I guess the poetics will be still there for people who just finished the 2.0 story and are in the 2.1-2.55 story and for those people who haven't buy the expansion yet.
But Soldiery will be converted into Poetics, that is sure.

Because the new highest(?)-tomes/gears are to get by our regular expert run(why not a different version?-.-).. but those will be lv60 ONLY! Wich is stupid >-> Cant get any new tomes for weeks! I dont want to grind(nor I have that much time) to lv60 just to have the possibility to get newest weekly tomes! o: <
