Relic vs Poetic Sword/Shield Question

So I've decided that I'm going to main PLD throughout HW before leveling my Machinist.

Now, I've not read much on Relic weapons for the expansion, however I was wondering whether or not at this point there is much point to leveling my Relic up. Right now I'm on Atma Curtana/Holy Shield and 70% percent done my Str +2 book.

I've been rocking the Soldiery 110 Sword/Shield for the longest time and I am due for an upgrade. Now, here is where my question lies:

Do I keep working on Relic, or just go poetic?

Any suggestions or advice appreciated.

You're going to have to grind long and very hard on your relic to finish it in time for the expansion. Conversely, you can get the i130 poetic set with two weeks worth of poetics and maybe eight or nine hours worth of effort running LotA > WoD three times to obtain the tomestone and upgrade the shield and sword. I'd go for instant gratification and grab the poetic weapon.

Well, I don't intend on getting it by expansion time, but since they are expanding them throughout the expansion as well I thought it worthy to at least attempt upgrading it up and working it through the expansion as well since if I'm not mistaken, they are BiS, no?

You certainly can, nothing's stopping you from getting both. You'll need to invest gil in both the alexandrite phase and the zodiac phase, as well as allied seals, it's up to you whether you choose to spend them now or save them for unknown expenditures in the expansion.

The HW relic doesn't come out until 3.1 (I think), so there will be a small gap before we start the next relic, but from what we know, only a bonus is being offered for those that finished a zeta relic, we have no idea what that is, and it is speculated that the new relic will start fresh. It also depends on how quickly, or not quickly at all, our weapons will be replaced with higher level gear. I'd recommend the poetic weapon regardless, unless you have another class you want it for, then continue working on your relic with that in hand if it interests you

If you were farming light for zeta or only had a couple dungeon runs left for zodiac I'd say go for it, but if you're still on Atma books..

Nah, ship has sailed. We'll probably get a big nerf to all phases of the 2.0 relic after Heavensward or in 3.1, so there's no point in trying to grind all those Atma books, GC/Token items, light, and dungeon drops right now.

Of course if just for completionist sake you want to get the achievement, keep working on it, but you're better off with your IWorks Magitek Shield right now.

3.1 is the first upgrade to the new relic iirc, but the base weapon is available at 3.0

They aren't expanding anything on the 2.0 relics in 3.0. The 3.0 relics will be separate from the 2.0. The benefits for getting the 2.0 relics are already in place, title and glamour. Any advantage of significance beyond possibly skipping a stage of the 3.0 relic line would be significant pressure on new players to be forced back into old content. Suggestions like "the customized states continue to stay customized" would be one of these kinds of overly significant advantages. My suggestion: save your time, save your money, get the poetics weapon, maybe upgrade it, maybe not, but if you're not already on Nexus or Zodiac at this point, just drop it, because it likely won't be worth it to spend so much gil and time into trying to complete the weapon. You'd be much better off just trying to get a jump start on the new relics in 3.0 when the expac comes out instead of holding yourself back in 2.0 content to complete your Zeta.

At this point I'm not even sure I'd worry about poetics, unless you already have tokens from the weekly. Grant it, I'm biased against the Towers anymore.

For completion sake, the Relic is nice, but any work on the Relic will be time not spent in HW. I seriously doubt poetics will carry you further than 56.

Given the ammount of content they're boasting, 50 - 60 = 1 - 50 at 2.0, poetics might not even last till 54.

Currently the Zeta weapons are BiS as you can completely customize the stats that they have. As for it being "worth it" that all comes down to you. If you want to work on your Zeta weapons then have at it, they're not that difficult and really not that expensive if you spiritbind your own materia and go with a 3 stat mix. There's also no need to rush through it as they'll be nerfing the requirements a bit once 3.0 drops.

Okay, perfect. So I don't have to stress about plowing through this Relic in order to get the new one in HW, that was my main concern that I HAD to have it in order to move on to the next stage.

I'll focus on getting the Poetic Sword/Shield unless I can manage Dreadwyrm.
