Also, yes, Barrett would qualify as a MCN for sure, but Vincent would not. Gun wielding has nothing to do with being a machinest. Machinists are basically fighters that fight using a variety of gadgets that can often be modified. Barrett is a good example. His arm can be outfitted with a number of different gadgets, from a gatling gun, to a grenade launcher, even a chainsaw. Edgar, works in a similar function. Vincent just finds a new gun and uses it. There is nothing special about his guns. And don't anybody even dare say Dirge of Cerberus.

I think I may level machinist first due to it being the dps and taking longer to get ques for dungeons and get that out of the way. But I'm excited for all the new jobs cant wait to try them out.
I'm making the point that neither barret nor vincent is remotely like a machinist.
Aesthetically, vincent is closer.
FF7 is not really in line with anything that happens in FF14. The job type games, FF1-6, Tactics, FF9 even, are far more in line with the philosophy behind FF14.
Also also, where is the FF6 hype? More Celes please.
Im cautiously excited. The animations of the atks haven't been too impressive yet imo. Although I do like the concept of it more than bard so far. Their limit break 3 should be a sniper rifle with a golden aura gathering aether b4 firing an epic shot to the boss.
Dirge of Cerberus though....
Well, panda did say aesthetically. You should be be able to see that.
The Machinist shoots stylishly and looks more like Vincent. Conceptually, they might be very different but most of the moves still seem to be shots and reloads.
And the way the character is visualized (hence, aesthetics) is definitely closer to Vincent.
Barret has gadgets, sure.
However it was all about his arm, and his characterization didn't revolve around being an engineer but being a gruff resistance fighter.
The Machinists adds special shots and Barret modifies his own gun, this does have some similarity.
But Barret doesn't really use gadgets outside the arm, and the modifications he uses aren't as stylized (it's purposefully gritty, in fact) as the MCH.
And I'm gonna say it!
Vincent modifies his shots and gets special guns in Dirge of Cerberus, adding conceptual similarity to the visual one!
This is all irrelevant though, since Lucca from Chrono Trigger is clearly the ultimate Machinist.
See, I'm talking about Machinist as a whole. Series wide. What they have in common. Not FFXIV's own specific version. In the traditional sense.

Zophar, losing battle.
I'll keep it simple: Barret used a gun(Arm*) and his attacks were different shots/ammo, using said gun(Arm*); you had Big Shot (Ammo), Mind Blow (Ammo), Grenade Bomb (Ammo), Satellite Beam (Magitek), Ungarmax (Ammo) and Catastrophe (Aether).
So, technically, Barret is as much a MCN as any other gun-using FF character. Because his arm is a gadget that he modifies himself. That qualifies him as an engineer.
Epic for sure.
On the AoE side of business, it'd be cool if it was a DX11, tricked out version of Satellite Beam(LB1), Ungarmax(LB2) and Catastrophe(LB3), too. Magitek pseudo-Gunarm, for the win.
Have mercy.
