Do you play your favored role?

In preparation for Heavensward I reactivated my old account, finished the MSQ a few days ago and startet leveling a few classes for cross class stuff. I really like some of the DPS classes, especially Monk, but after tanking myself a bit I really cant stand most other tanks anymore. I feel so helpless from the DPS/Healer perspective, it makes me really nervous when I see all the screw ups they do. As a tank myself (I usually play a Tank in MMO games, but the ones here never appealed to me) I can at least make the run itself much smoother. Sure, it takes longer with bad dps players and with a weak healer I have to pull less or rotate my cool downs better, but I can actively do something about the situation. As DPS I just try to do the optimal rotation and hope we somehow make it through (ok, maybe BLM Sleep .. ). Even as Healer I can at least correct a few mistakes, but you are also very limited when it comes to aoe dances and multiple screw ups or tanks that dont know anything about target marking / focus dmg / monster positioning

After the last few days I am quite sure I will end up tanking with the DRK (but only if I like the playstyle), although I would love to play a Monk, but I just cant stand most other people in the Tank role (I know there a some good tanks, but I dont like lottery, especially not with those Duty finder wait times for DPS ).

Do you see yourself in the same position?

I try to keep one of each role geared up enough to be useful, and to be adept at all three roles so I can fill in weak spots. I like bard, scholar, warrior, and black mage the best of all the classes I've leveled up. My preferred role in any MMO is support, which XIV doesn't really have, but bard and scholar both provide some support abilities, which is why they're my top two preferred jobs.

Most problems I see from tanks have to do more with tank egos than with bad playing, especially in the larger raids. Sure I can handle a dozen mobs at once even at iLvl95! I am the main tank, not you scrubs!

Because I lack that ego, I make a great off tank. But it's not my preferred role in large scale raids, mostly because I don't want to deal with the other tanks!

Healer is my preferred role, and I've had a few situations, but mostly just in the 4-man dungeons. I'm definitely not comfortable tanking, but there's even times where I just wanna rip their sword/axe out of their hands "Gimme that!" role change on the spot and get on with the rest of the dungeon.

Ultimately though, it's all part and parcel of an MMORPG, you're going to run into less experienced players often, best to try and help them improve and just tell the cranky ones to shove off.

Oh, I have to point out that I didnt only mean people who play the Tank because of the same reason as I probably will. I also can understand when someone says he sees himself almost forced to play DPS because most others are usually ... not that great. Same goes for healers.

Monk is my favoured class, but yes, I also end up tanking way more than I play monk since I geared it up, since I don't have to deal with crap tanks that way

I typically play healers and supports in most things, as I just like helping out more so than leading or doing damage. While I do love healing in 14, I found myself starting off as a WHM, finishing the game/main'ing SMN, and switching between SMN, WAR, and SCH when raiding lol. I try to keep up gear wise with each because depending on the instance I get the same feeling of helplessness for one role or the other. Some fights I wanna make sure I heal because of the heal difficulty, some fights that I feel are huge dps checks I bust out my SMN, fights where tanks drive me insane or for newer content that I'm familiar with I tend to go as a tank to avoid that frustration, even though it usually doesn't help much lol.

Between all the jobs I find playing my SMN more enjoyable than when I'm healing, and the fact that I have tools that can support makes me like it even more. In high lvl raiding its probably not good on my MP to raise people a lot but I love how handy its been in almost most of the other content. When Heavensward comes out I definitely wanna DRK, but I just dont find myself healing as a main, but I definitely still jump to the chance it when i get the urge or when someone needs. In the meantime I'll just Rez people and debuff things with my SMN to fill my supporty-helpy needs lol

Personally I prefer ranged DPS classes, mostly caster/magic classes like the Black Mage, or dark magic like necromancer/warlock/mesmer (from Guild Wars 1 (unavailable here), or pet classes like the summoner, or archery like the bard. And when it comes to playing melee classes, I prefer playing the stealthy stabbity rogue/thief/burglar that stabs mobs in the back, so I was quite happy about the addition of the ninja in 2.4 since the other melee classes in FF XIV have no appeal to me. So I've leveled up a black Mage first, then summoner, then bard, then ninja. I also leveled up pugilist and lancer for their cross-skills for my bard and ninja, I found pug particularly boring so it was quite a task to get at LV 42 for mantra. I had a Hobbit Guardian in LOTRO, a tank, and I found it fun there, so I was thinking of leveling one here too, but after seeing how difficult the dungeons here, I better know the game first. The two-hands axe Warrior looks pretty badass so I'm leveling it now.
