As usual, Estellios is right.

Is there much call for grouping? I've hardly spoken to anybody ingame yet on Wutai, it doesn't feel like FFXI where xp parties were prevelant and there was always somebody to group with.
Grouping probably isn't strictly necessary for mid-game content, but you're going to level much, much faster in a group. It's different than in FFXI because the only people using the party search feature tend to be JP players. They're going to make improvements to the party search feature, but currently, most grouping happens in linkshells. Other than behest -- where you group with whomever is doing the behest -- people just party with players in their linkshell.

In terms of party-based content, there are the two Grand Company dungeons (see below) at ranks 25 and 45. There are also mid-level NMs, faction leves/NMs, and high level (a/k/a "Open World") NMs. And leves, behest, and grind parties at all levels.

All of the main storyline quests, job quests, and side quests can be completed solo. Some can be completed in a party, but you don't need a party to do them.
At what stage can you start on the Grand Company quests as well?
At level 22, you can do a quest in each of the 3 cities to become a "recruit" in that city's Grand Company. Then at 25, you can do the first dungeon. At 45, you can do the last dungeon for Grand Companies.

There will be more Grand Company quests coming in the next patch, which is supposed to arrive in the next couple weeks.
