To those who are considering windows 10, I would suggest caution on such a decision. It is self-proclaimed as a 'freemium operating system', meaning many features will be locked unless you decide to pay extra.

I for one will wait and see what is and isn't free, before I decide to upgrade.

That's 100% incorrect. For the first year, the upgrade from Windows 7 and Windows 8.1 will be free; similar to how for 6 months after its release, the upgrade for Windows 8 was $40. After that year, users will need to pay to upgrade, but there is no subscription or "IAP" you need to buy for the OS to work.

The heck happened to Windows 9?

The numbers that go with Windows are arbitrary. In fact, what we know as Windows 8,1 is really version 6.3.9600. There have been several reasons given, the first being that "7 8 9", and that 10 is really binary (which is 2 in decimal). In any event, it's just a marketing decision.

There are lots of Windows applications out there which do a very stupid form of version checking: They ask for the Windows version string and compare the first digit (!) they find. In this (flawed) logic, these applications would interpret "Windows 9" as "Windows 95 or Windows 98".

So, in order to keep these (broken) applications functioning, Microsoft decided to skip Windows 9 and go straight to Windows 10. BTW, there is no risk for applications written for "Windows 1", since these applications are so extremely old that they have stopped working a long time ago. I can guarantee with almost 100% certainty that Square Enix is well aware of Windows 10 and are planning to fully support it. Also, nVidia and AMD are definitely working on compatible Windows 10 graphics drivers. So by the time Windows 10 is released on 29th July, everything should be compatible.

I can't speak for Nvidia, but AMD's drivers are entirely compatible with Windows 10 (running the preview as my daily driver).

Nostalgia comes up, when i think about windows as a side programm to DOS; my first PC even came from Packard Bell, who did a extra software overlay which looked like a living room.

how you felt like a "real hacker" when you edited your autoexec.bat and config.sys to load only necessary drivers to get enough High-Mem free to run your latest game.

heck i even did write a start menu with an entry for every game, with optimal settings, and autostarting the game...

What he is saying is that, windows 10 will be Free, but it will be the last windows, after that there will be only upgrades like how google chrome works (there's no Chrome 1,2,3,....)

Then, Microsoft (the new CEO want it that way) may charge you for "upgrade", sure you still have windows 10... but you're gonna pay for "extra" like he said.

Yes, thank you, I am aware of the new strategy for Windows. However, there is a large group of people who believe that after the first year, you will need a subscription to use the OS, which has been clarified.

I can't speak for Nvidia

NVidia already released a Windows 10 optimized driver.

It bring some advantages of DX12 to non DX12 software. This shall speedup games up to 20% they claim.

With the Heavensward Benchmark I got around 1% (~100) more points. Compared to Windows 8.1.

No. Once upgraded to Windows 10, we will keep it up to date for the supported life of the device, for no additional charge.

I would ask caution on this, as always, it can lead to an understanding that could be similar but different to their.
They need money, so they're gonna find a way to get some, this is where the "extra" come, or maybe from another source (advertising ?)
