The code Steam gave you was Steam specific so SE knew that you got it from Steam when you registered it on the Mogstation to activate the game. The Steam and non-Steam client are exactly the same, that's why it lets you play without downloading it through Steam as there's no difference there, only with the actual code you already used.

They've said HW will be coming to Steam and before early access so just wait a bit longer. They have tons of time left yet to enable orders before Early Access begins.

sorry for the stupid question but how would that work then? This is my first real MMO so I have no idea how expansions work, if I do buy it from steam will I get a specific code that I type somewhere? And will my already non-steam client update itself so that it adds heavensward on it? Or do I have to download ffxiv again and then add heavensward as dlc? I am so confused right now it's frustrating

Well we don't know for sure (as it's not available for purchase yet), but more than likely when someone purchases Heavensward on Steam they'll simply get a code to be used on the SE Mogstation website (exactly the same as when they purchase the game now they get a code which has to be entered onto the Mogstation to activate the game). If you right click the game in your Steam library there is an option for "View CD Key" and there's the existing code. It doesn't seem unreasonable the the DLC code will also appear there and/or will be emailed to you/visible somewhere else in your account.

As for the download, all updates are handled via SE directly, not Steam, so it'll be the same as non-Steam people in that the client downloads what it needs to when it needs to (information seems to suggest it's going to be about a 15GB update which makes sense as they've said there will be as much new content available as there was content available at the launch of 2.0).

So basically, buy off Steam when it's available, get the code they give you, add that to your existing account on the SE Mogstation website. Play game like normal, it auto updates/downloads expansion/patches.
