Weren't the lalas Thamaturges? Mages are squishy. If you want a serious answer, the game's training you to grab and manage aggro as a tank. Sadly, we see lots of tanks who can't grasp this concept.

You're referring to the fight in the bar, I believe. Many of the NPC opponents in that fight have an abnormal amount of health and/or defense for your level and are meant for your NPC ally. If you go randomly picking targets you're not going to be of much help. However, many of the NPCs that appear in each round of the battle are quite normal (and meant for you), and your ally and/or the quest text on the side of your screen directs you to go after them specifically.
