Yeah, some of us have been here. But to wake up next to a dragon, must have been one hell of a party.
I always thought the oblivion lyrics was based on ice heart's perspective.

The war didn't begin because people started befriending dragons. People were branded heretics due to befriending the creatures Ishgard was at war with.

The war started before the first heretics. How long before, is unclear. It's possible that the first dragon sympethizers could have appeared centuries after the conflict began. It doesn't help that we don't really know WHY the conflict began. All we know is that Ishgard did SOMETHING unforgivable in the eyes of the dragons... something they're apparently appearing to be gearing up to do again.

It's possible that the people of Ishgard (maybe even the folks in charge) honestly don't know, or have forgotten, what sin they committed, but Midgardsormr knows what it was, and it seems likely that Iceheart knows as well. Neither of them seem to think it's worth telling the Warrior of Light, though, instead dropping lines like, "You will see that we are in the right." Well, maybe, but being a little more forthcoming MIGHT prevent us from, you know, kicking lots of dragon ass before we find out what a terrible mistake we've made in siding with Ishgard...

The Ascians seem to suffer from this problem, as well, given how convinced Elidibus was that we'd understand the truth someday. Well, we still don't understand, and Nabrielas is dead (which, granted, might have been a desirable outcome to Elidibus).

This literary contrivance has been the downfall of many a sympethetic anti-villian!
