Interesting approach to moderating bad behavior in online games:

I saw a interesting video by PBS Game/show's youtube channel about how League of Legends is approaching dealing with bad behavior/bad sportsmanship in their game.

    https://youtu.be/53HRG7m4ubY

Give it a look if like. After watching it, I thought it would be great if something like like existed in FFXIV.

Jamin goes into detail how this isn't a simple A.I word filter of bad language but it's based on standards set by the players and lets the community rate what is considered unacceptable.

I'm sure we have all been exposed to some unfortunate behavior in this game. Something like this introduced into FFXIV would be really cool.

That's pretty interesting what that gave's devs are trying to do. I know the standard reply to ppl are given is to grow a thicker skin, in regards to how to handle rude or crass behavior towards them, but it really should go the other way too. If they can make a system like that work, i say godspeed.

I'm just gonna wait and see how this works out in LoL first. They've made many attempts at curbing 'toxic' behaviour using various game systems and none of them have worked so far.

From what I watched, it seems to work through just the chat feature. There's more ways to encounter positive and negative feedback beyond just words, especially in this game.

'lets the community rate what is considered unacceptable'

We have already seen how sensitive the playerbase is in this game, I rather not have this.

Stuff like discrimination however, well thats already against the TOS and can be reported and action can be taken if evidence is provided. I assume LoL are using it for this reason above else, if people are thinking it to be used for calling out players for making errors or low output etc.., this is not where it applies to or should.

While LoL still has a reputation, that reputation is mostly(*) historic at this point; the actual amount of abuse/harassment/inappropriate language in the games has dropped steadily over recent years. Trust me, having been around League for a long time, the efforts have genuinely made a hell of a difference.

(*) mostly, because it's still by the nature of the genre it's part of, one of those games that involves forcing people to work as a team, in an environment they can lose in, in a commitment that lasts 40+ minutes... and spawned from DotA, whose community was probably one of the historically worst in gaming. There'll never be 'no' rudeness in it, and when every game involves 9 other players... yeah.

I take it you've not actually played League of Legends and seen the level of bad behavior/bad sportsmanship ingame?

The complaints send to the ai are user made reports, which are actually abused a lot.

Difference between dota player base and lol player base is that at least when I played dota, everyone knew everyone else was a jerk What was nice about it though, was that you could be the biggest jerk in the World, but if you're carrying the team 21-0 then people put the difference aside and just git'er done... I miss those days, now it's all about playing nice.

So it's gonna curb people being abusive in chat. People can't berate others for playing terribly anymore. What's stopping them from just abandoning more (rather than putting up with people's terrible play)? Increased penalty? Then what's stopping people from just force disconnecting? Forced penalty on DC? Now that affects even innocent ones. What's stopping people from finding anything and everything offensive and essentially turning silence during play in DF as a choice to the only safest way of play?

Meh, rather than having a system to stop players for being abusive because they think the other players are terrible, I'd rather have a system that helps players be less terrible at the game or at worse separate them from ever meeting in df in the first place. The former sounds like putting a straitjacket on someone who was hurting himself badly trying to scratch an itch. It'll stop him but he'll still writhe around like a lunatic.

Encouraging helpful behavior usually works out better than punishing bad behavior. You see less of the latter if you do more of the former. You can't let abuse go without some kind repercussion, but I think the focus should be on making people not want to be that way in the first place. Commedations, as an example, would've been a good idea if they gave worthwhile rewards and weren't so easily accumulated with very little effort.
