The best way to accomplish a more 3D look when drawing is to adds slightly darker shading around the edges of part of the drawing, this will give it the impression that that part curves backwards.

It makes them appears stiff, it is a problem I have as well so I recognize the error. It is one of the reasons I don't draw much plus my drawings only look good about 25% of the time and I have to be drawing something while looking at it. I got a great imagination I just have a really hard animating it and putting it on paper. I will stick with words lol.
By the way I am currently watching Xam'd, catching up on some of my Netflix Anime. Actually if you like zombies a must see is High School of the Dead. It is zombie survival done by Japanese that delivers really well and has some Ecchi goodness in it.
